How about a non-political question?

Have I ever told you guys about the expert witness assignment I had in the nineties? It involved a Plymouth mini-van that ran over a large piece of metal that had fallen off a semi-trailer and burst into flames? Nope? Really horrific story…
Illinois... brought down the Governor who was Sec of State at the time and his office allowed the truck driver to get his license?

OK, so we know who has it and who doesn't, and I understand it was for CAFE standards, but does it really save on gas, and if so, how much?
Not much unless you’re sitting in traffic… but if you’re sitting in traffic so slow that you might as well measure your fuel consumption in hours instead of distance, it saves a lot… it’s impossible to give a number because traffic makes my consumption go up so much, the fuel economy gauge tops out 5 minutes before the car moves again lol …but it’s a number somewhere higher than 80%.
If you’re in traffic that’s moving, it probably won’t be noticeable.

The goal wasn’t to save fuel in real world driving. The goal was to have an incremental improvement in the EPA fuel economy test.

Manufacturers pay a penalty for falling below fuel economy standards and also earn credits for surpassing them. They basically got a positive return on their investment.

Nah, just funnin' y'all. Dirt roads, too! Besides, pavement would be too hard on the Indian's horse hooves. You should probably all avoid Idaho. Bad state!
That's what I thought. My wife's cousin lives in Montana and they just got a stop sign......:D:cool:

8% if you believe the Society of Automotive Engineers as cited by Roat and Track magazine: https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-ca...303/automatic-start-stop-useful-fuel-savings/ The video is more informational than the article.
7% based on a AAA study: https://newsroom.aaa.com/2014/07/aa...rld-benefits-automatic-stop-start-technology/
Both studies are 7 or 8 years old, so technology may have improved since the studies were conducted.

One study also acknowledged that the stop feature also improves overall emissions. The video also addresses the issue of the demands on the starting system.

I hate it too. My Acura MDX has a button on the console to turn it off, but it has to be pressed again each time you start the car. One tip related to the jerky start though---> At least on my MDX, if I slightly turn the steering wheel after the auto stop has engaged (like a second before the light turns green) the car restarts before I release the brake. That avoids the jerky start up.
On my Acura RDX, the engine won't stop unless I fully depress the brake past the point where the car will stop. It will restart when engaged by letting up on the brake just a little. It's become second nature to me and I don't mind it a bit.

Mine is a 2011. The 1st year it came out (I'm that guy). It doesn't have it. It's currently at the shop with a $3400 bill attached to it. :( Been there for almost a month.
Sorry to hear that. I’m on my third Ecoboost. The only problem I ever had was a failed coil on my 2014.

2014 F150 Ecoboost FX4 Supercrew here with 88,000 miles - replaced battery, tires, and had the brakes/rotors replaced. It doesn't have any engine shutdown feature and my average MPG is 18. Best truck I've ever owned....
Oh yea - I replaced the turn signal multi-function arm about a year ago; the windshield wipers would come on all by themselves.

I'll be due for a new truck this next year - do the new F150's have that auto-shutdown feature???

My 2021 f150 has the auto shut down. I don’t even notice it.

The question I have is, especially with the turbocharged engines, that shutdown drops the oil pressure. 90 percent of engine life is expended at start where there is insufficient lubrication at the bearings.... It's even harder on turbochargers.
How do they get around this issue?

Not sure about your engine/turbo question but just an FYI, most if not all start-stop vehicles have a electrohydraulic pump to keep transmission fluid pressure up when the engine is shut down.

IMO it’s just maintenance attached with owning a vehicle. As mentioned earlier, I probably could have saved $1k by doing some things myself or taking it to a different shop, but I wanted the gas smell fixed (pcv) and then told them to go through it and see what also needs to be done.
I forgot that they discovered the locking hub went out on the drivers side for the 4 wheel drive, so that was replaced as well. That’s included in that cost.
Truck a has been great otherwise. No real issues with the Ecoboost. It’s comfortable, strong enough to tow and after owning one, wouldn’t know what to do without it. I’m a little biased because she’s my 1st new truck I ever purchased.

My Powerboost doesn't shut down the oil pump. I still have oil pressure when the engine is not running.

We test drove the Outback XT which has the turbos, or turbo. We loved the power, but for the Outback the start/stop was extremely noticeable. There was a delay, then almost a hard jump off the line to get going. I also let off the brake a tad to get it started and it was pulling me forward at one point. That’s the experience we had with Subaru tho. Our NA Outback isn’t that noticeable. Not sure about lubing the turbos, but that is a good point.

Well my wife's 2014 Mazda CX 9 has developed a transmission "shudder" between 4th and 5th gear. Dealer tried the "easy, cheap" fix and it didn't work. The only other solution they have is to rebuild the transmission. We just put almost $4K into fixing the water pump that is internal to the engine which caused coolant to get into the oil. I didn't want to put that money into the thing because they couldn't guarantee me that the engine wasn't damaged already by the coolant intrusion. But the admiral insisted and prevailed. But she knows I won't put another dime into this thing so she is looking at possible replacements. All of them have the stop/start "feature" so I guess I will have an opinion on this early in 23...

My wife has a 2020 Ford Edge st with the 2.7 ecoboost. She said at first it bothered her. Now she doesn’t even notice it.

Sorry guys, I'm looking for a Hemi. Or an older Vette with the 5.7 V8. F all these eco this and eco that. :)

I had a Dodge Ram with a 5.7 Hemi. I liked the truck but hated the engine. The only thing it was good at was sucking gas. I bought an f150 with the 3.5 ecoboost and was blown away by that engine. I’m on my third f150 ecoboost and I’m still impressed by that engine. 400hp, 500lb-ft torque, 14,000lb towing capacity!!!’
