House battery is the same as the generator starting battery?

I use this gizmo. Pretty ingenious.

It seems less important now that I've owned the boat for a couple of years, but I still can't figure out why it made sense for even a 310DA to not to have a dedicated house bank. Mine has two Group 31s per engine, with generator and house I think coming from the port engine bank, although I've never sorted it completely.

I always thought the 4 batteries would be better setup with one per engine and two for dedicated house, with the generator sharing one of the engine start batteries. Ideally the generator should have its own, but its such a small engine that I can see situations where the batteries are too weak to start propulsion but can still start the generator.

As for why SR chose to do it this way? For some reason I suspect it might have something to do with less complexity in the alternator charging setup, allowing each engine to charge a single bank of batteries without either extra isolator circuits or upgrading one of the engine alternators to charge 3 batteries effectively.

Mine has a dedicated generator battery located behind the house batteries I figured they where all set up like this.
Interestingly, same boat, no dedicated genny battery. John (Gimme Time) go back and read your 1st post. You said you have a group 31 on the starboard motor. I think you meant 8D. Mike

Mike,

You are correct on the 8Ds as the 31s are on the Bow thruster!

Hope your weather is improving up there so you’ll be in the water before July 4th. PS, planning on heading back up into Canada next summer so we shall C what happens. Planning on going up the St Lawerence SeaWay to Montreal and down the locks to Ottawa, Kingston and then see what we’re thinking. Love the Trent Severn Waterway do ya just never know where we might wind up for the winter.

Wow John, I wish I had your time! Maybe when the kids get older...We splash May 3rd. We could be in now, but wouldn't be able to use it until then anyway. If you make Lake Mi, let me know. You still have my cell #. M
