I just installed a terrific Garmin chart plotter and GFS10 fueld monitors on my twin 4.3 IOs. The last step is to hook up the fuel tank. I need the ignition switch and the fuel level. I pulled the gauge and have 4 wires. Does anyone know which two I need?

Thanks, Mark photo.JPG

Hey Mark - I see that nobody has responded to this and the Garmin instructions don't provide much in the way of guidance. I don't know the answer because I didn't connect my fuel gauge. I didn't do it because I couldn't figure out what the benefit was. I've been using the GFS 10 for over a year and I use it exclusively for the remaining fuel calculation. If you remember to update the Garmin when you fill the tank it is amazingly accurate.

Same for me. Sorry. MM

I replaced my fuel sending unit last year. If I recall, the pink wire goes to the fuel sending unit, and purple is the ignition terminal. But I could be wrong. On your harness connector, I think (there's that word again) black is ground, blue is lighting...

But it' easy enough to verify. Remove the mid-berth cushions. Use a phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws from the deck hatch. That is where the sending unit is. You'll then be able to see the color of the wires there, which should match those at the gauge.

FWIW, I just removed my gauge the other day and found that the pink wire is responsible for my gauge sometimes dropping offline and reading below E. If I wiggle it, the gauge fluctuates from working to not working. I probably need to replace the harness connector...

The wiring diagram contained in the 280 manual has this info, if you don't have a manual you can download it from searay.com.

Pink is the sending line, don't recall the others, best check the wiring diagram.

Why does one want to connect the fuel gauge to the unit?

MM

I think it's the reverse...by hooking up the fuel sending unit, your plotter can show how much fuel is left in the tank according to the sending unit. At least I think that's the idea.
