Honda Generator Group Buy - Questions

Re: Honda Generator Group Buy - Head Count

From the wiring diagram in the user manual it appears the 15A is always available to the 30A receptable, even though a full 30A can not be delivered. Can anyone confirm this? It would make plugging it in very simple.
Yes that is correct.

My plan is to run it on-shore when docked at friends' cottages to charge the house batteries and possibly cool down the cabin with the A/C for 30-60 minutes before bed (it looks like it has the juice to do it). Ideally I could simply plug-in with my existing shore-power cable.

This has be debated for years here regarding using them on their boats and the concensus is that although many people do use them, there are many drawbacks. Do a search and read away. There is tons of feedback.

Do you mean even running them on shore has been condemned?

Here, they are condemned if they anywhere within site of a boat. :smt101

I didn't think the 2000 would run an airconditioner.

It will run some of the smaller units in the 7K-10K BTU range....

Hi,
I signed up for a 2000i on the other thread. I was hesitating because I don't know when you will decide wether there is enough interest. Maybe if you set an end date more will commit.
If it takes more than a few weeks more I will probably back out.
Thanks,
Greg

I have been thinking the same thing! I can only hold on to the cash so long...lol

Hey guys, I think he said 15 or so would be enough interest. At my count you are looking at 9-10 right now so you are almost there. I would get one but my Honda Generator budget got blown on "other" boat stuff and slip fees.

No attaching them to a boat. As mentioned before there is not a real ground on them.

I can understand about the CO emissions. But what about an on board generator? There are CO fumes too. How does it make "safer"? Just trying to learn.

Please do a search on honda or portable generator - this has been covered ad nauseum here and sometimes it gets a little heated

We would be like a bird on a 13,000 volt power line.

Ship to Corporate Center. Pick up yourself from there. 40 mins from Ottawa. Just pay HST coming back.

ktcanuck...can you elaborate on this "Corporate Center"?

Yeah, I know. Read all that...quite a debate! This would be used very carefully on occasion, pretty much only with no one on-board, likely while me and a couple buddies sit on the dock drinking a beer. The generator would have other non-marine applications but I could see it being useful a few weekends a year on the boat. It's not actually something I would be too keen to drag around all summer.

I chose to not get a genny on this boat when I bought it given I knew its use would be very limited...

I have read the "debates" and I understand the concerns and don't dispute them. What I asked is what makes on board generators "safer". They also have CO emissions exiting the boat near the cockpit/cabin. So unless there is something different with on board gennies that I don't know about, and I probably don't, I don't see a difference in safety.

There are a lot of differences...........

1.Fuel systems on portables are not vented for marine use....they vent from the fuel cap
2.Portable carburetor's bowl overflow just drips from the carburetor; marine generators have their bowl overflow piped to the interior of the carburetor body where the leak goes into the engine, not under it.
3.Fuel systems on portables do not have marine type fuel lines
4..The engines do not have ignition protected components
5.The permanent marine generators are wired with a neutral and a ground connected to the boat's system; portables do not.

While CO is an important consideration, it is far from the only risk.

Frank thank you for the info... that helps me understand it better. Most of the reading though pertained to CO's and why I brought up the question.

Again thanks.
