Holding Tank

Any advice for cleaning out a fresh water holding tank that's been sitting for bout 6 yrs.

Fill it with a mixture of bleach and water. Whatever the bleach container recommends for killing stuff. Pump it through out the system and leave the pump on for the next two hours to assure you have pressure and the water/bleach mixture throughout your system. While you are waiting, remove the screens from the faucets so that when you pump the mixture through, none of the large chunks get stuck. There might not be any, but it's not worth the pain and you have time to remove them anyway. After the two hours have expired, flush the system with freshwater. Some folks use white vinegar to flush the system and get rid of the bleach taste. I think it's about a cup per 5 or 10 gallons. I can't remember, but it will help neutralize the taste and you can let it sit for quite a while. Rinse that and you should be good to go.

Water tank
1. Use a solution of 1 pint Purex or Clorox bleach to 25 gallons of water). With tank empty, pour chlorine solution into tank.
2. Complete filling of tank with fresh water. Open each faucet and drain cock until air has been released and the entire system is filled. Do not turn off the pump; it must remain on to keep the system pressurized and the solution in the lines
3. Allow to stand for at least three hours, but no longer than 24 hours.
4. Drain through every faucet on the boat (and if you haven't done this in a while, it's a good idea to remove any diffusion screens from the faucets, because what's likely to come out will clog them). Fill the tank again with fresh water only, drain again through every faucet on the boat.
5. To remove excess chlorine taste or odor which might remain, prepare a solution of one quart white vinegar to five gallons water and allow this solution to agitate in tank for several days.
6. Drain tank again through every faucet, and flush the lines again by filling the tank 1/4-1/2 full and again flushing with potable water.

A good tip for keeping the tank "fresh" is to NEVER use water from a well when you fill up. Well water contains more minerals than water processed at a treatment facility. When these minerals sit in the tank for any length of time, the water will take on a funky rotten egg smell. The only way to get rid of that is to do the bleach treatment all over again.

By the way, when you say “Holding tank” after reading your post I assume you are asking about your fresh water tank, not your waste water tank.

The word Holding tank often refers to the black water tank where the pooh-pooh goes.
