Good afternoon, I am trying to replace the holding tank vent filter on my 2001 290DA. I can't get to it from the engine room, not sure anyone would be able to. I would love any help with this topic.

Do you have any pictures? I replaced mine by crawling down in there and reaching over the top of the holding tank, clipping the zip-ties that were on there, unscrewing the caps and replacing, then resecuring with new zip ties. I assume your's is a further reach if you say you can't get to it.

You can't even see it from the engine room its so far up there. almost in line with the drivers seat on the stbd side. there is a cutout under the back of the stbd seat. maybe that's how i reach it.

I have a 1998 SR290DA and can't find mine either but I can tell it needs changing! Manuals show there is one on the stbd side but no way I can get down into my ER to look up that way for it. I have a round cutout in the stbd wall in the storage area under the aft-facing seat cushion. Please let me know if it works for you.

We can see the filter with a mirror and flashlite but I can't figure out how to access it. So far the only method appears to be removing the hot water heater, sliding the holding tank back into the engine compartment and then changing the filter. The labor estimate is between $500.00 to $750.00.
I was thinking of just adding a second filter that will be mounted in the engine compartment. I can reach the filter hose at the thru-hull vent and splice into it and run a hose to the second filter and from there back to the thru-hull vent.

The straps are most likely going to break when you remove it. The fittings on each side are just like a garden hose so it is very easy to change. Just use some zip ties and find a suppot to tie it to. I had to stand on my head to get mine out of my 280. Just like anything on a boat, ain't Nuttin easy!

Might be best to get the old one out of there if possible. Might clog up in the future.

Definately should relocate it to somewhere more convenient. When you do, make sure no sea water or waste water can flow toward the filter. It must be mounted higher than the tank and the through hull.

Here is a bracket I (BetterBoat Products sell as an alternative to wire straps. Provides a solid mount from a single point for difficult installations.

We also have a far better price for the filters than anywhere else

We sell on eBay at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160472776825&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT Support your fellow CSR member and buy your filters from them.

I have the same issue and I was wondering what you ended up doing based on the input you received?

I hate when that happens... just be glad it wasn't 10 pages...ask me how I know

Fred290, Don't hold your breath for an answer. The last post was from 2011!! Mike
I’m sure i will be holding my breath trying to figure it out. LOL

They truly need to place these in an area that's easily accessible.

When I did mine on the 98 290 DA I had to stretch like plastic man and do almost everything one handed. Please have someone else hand you the new filter when you have the forward connection in your hand..... if you let go of this PITA connection it will spring forward just out of your reach.

Thanks for the tip.

This job is easy enough that you can have a small person (i.e. child) do it, so long as they know how to screw a hose connection on and off. That's who did it on my 40DA and 44DB.
