Whats up CSR? On my way our to the Hamptons today I ran aground at a slow speed due to some dredging on the south shore of LI. I have a couple of questions....

1 - Once you hit ground what exactly is the best thing to do? I raised the out drive because it felt like I was dug in pretty good for a bit but got out of it. I felt like if I cut the throttle I would never get out so I just adjusted the drvie until I was sprung.

2 - I am always worried about sucking in mud and sand when I hit bottom. The engine ran great and smooth as can be on the return trip so I think all is well. Should I do or check anything to make sure I escaped unscathed? Its an all sand bottom thanfully and not rock so that is HUGE!!!!

More than likely you are OK if you had no problems on the return trip. remember that your pick ups are above the prop so by trimming up you are probably OK. if you see your temp guage start to climb then I would consider changing your impellers, but seems like you did the right thing by trimming up. May I ask where you ran aground, and where was the tide? I am planning on running to westhampton from Patchogue and am trying to find out where the bad spots are right now. Thanks and good luck!

This has happened to me also. I have never had any issues.

Excellent point about the intake, I wasnt thinking that its above the prop. I might have dinged it abit but so far so good on the engine.

I was coming from Center Moriches and I believe the dredging began around buoy 26ish. I am very sorry I cant remember the exact number as I was locked into the GSP on the return trip. The detour is actually marked very well I just screwed the pooch on the trip over. On the way back I was more than ready for it and picked up and hit the buoys perfectly.

The way in when I hit the sand was actually high tide but the ride home was very close to low tide with no issues once I picked up the markers. Hope this helps. I am happpy to answer any other questions you might have.

Not experienced at this but I did run up on sand bars three separate times over the weekend (first time I have done that) so here were my instincts. All three times I was only at no wake speed and could see it come up on me. I immediately went to neutral, shut the engine and trimmed all the way up. Then got out and pushed the boat back out the way I came in (the 175 is easy to move). First time I sucked in enough sand to clog the t-stat so that it wouldn't fully close. Thus engine temp dropped to around 130 and never got higher than that. Also the sand dulled the paint shine on the bottom of the lower unit. Other than that - everything was fine. Seems to me the biggest thing to look for has already been posted - engine temp change high from damaged impellar or low from junk in the coolant clogging the t-stat.

Thanks - I am glad to here they are dredging at least, I have 3 weeks before I head east so hopefully be done by then. Glad you dont seem to have damage.
