Hit under water pile going 4 knots. Took under water camera and got video of area. Can see impact area, white assume it is the fiberglass
and a scrape most of the length of the boat. Hull is leakings slightly in the impact area but not along scrape. Need advice on how to fix.
Should they remove wide area along scrape? OR just fill in scrape? Is there any way to tell if hull is cracked beyond the impact areas?
Do they need to sand blast to bear fiberglass in the damaged areas?
Sitting in water at a Marina in Anecortes Washington.
Slight rain and 50 outside.

The boat needs to be hauled out and blocked up so the damage can be investigated. Unless you really hit the piling, the damage can be repaired from the exterior of the boat. The first step is going to be to remove the bottom paint over the whole length of the impact area so the gelcoat/fiberglass underneath is exposed. If the boat is leaking, then the damage is more than cosmetic. Your fiberglass guy can see the damage and will then grind down into the fiberglass to get to solid substrait at which time he can rebuild the ground out area with new glass and resin.

If the boat is leaking, don't let anyone tell you this is a cosmetic problem that can be repaired with putty and gelcoat....because it isn't. The good news is that these types of repairs will look big and bad, but below the waterline where gelcoat doesn't have to be matched or faired out with the hull, they are not usually very expensive. From your description, I'd be surprised if you even met your deductible. So get her out of the water sooner rather than putting it off. The longer she leaks, the further the water works will work its way into the fiberglass, and the bigger the repair will be.

Good luck with it.............

The boat is where Todd said. Hole is 4 by 16" and the bulk head saved us. Have picture, but no idea on how to post them. Solid boat. Good to know SR have compartment engieered areas. Not a fun time as we were at the start of our fall trip to Washington. Reported to insurance. Will post as the world continues.

Good luck Northern. It could happen to anybody. Just listen to Frank and this will turn out OK, not to much worse for the ware. Sorry about your fall trip. I konw how important family time and boating are. Hope you still get started, just a little delayed. JC

Best of luck. I know that they are very good.

Going over old post and thought I would finish this off.
Hull was fixed. The area was in bulk head area at the front on port side just beside where the bed is. There was no damage to the running gear. They were going to cut top off bulk head to place backing but ended up putting in foam as backing to build fiberglass on. It is still solid so it seems to have worked.
The hull had been scraped long ago before I got the boat and the original coating removed and hull painted. They took off all old paint sealed hull with 2 coats of resin then painted it.
We take the boat out of water when not in use and the hull paint is still good. Boat is in water for 1 to 2 months at a time two times a year. We have not put any additional anti fowling paint on the hull since 2013.
Cost was 10K for hole. 8K for scrape, resin and paint.

Northern, I am glad it worked out for you. It will be spring soon enough. 78 here in se KY . Record! Spring is very close indeed. JC
