I have a 2000 210 Sundeck with a 240hp engine. When idling amp gauge read 14. Once I increase RPM the gauges pegs at 16. Any thoughts as to why?

Id start by taking a voltage reading at the battery and also right at the alternator supply post. If those points are a more reasonable reading at both idle and off idle, then measure right at the back of the volt gauge on the helm. Could be a faulty gauge, faulty alternator or bad battery/battery cable.

Thanks for the info. Traveling till 25 Aug. Will do your recommended tests then

What is a normal volt reading. After replacing the battery, I found the 2 wire plug was disconnected at the alternator. I connected it and now the volt meter reads 14 at idle and 15 1/2 volts at 2000 rpm.
Is 15 1/2 a problem?

Yes, 15 1/2 is too high for a normal charging voltage, it is however, ok for certain batteries and or very cold temperatures.

A normal day to day alternator output should be 14.2 to 14.4.

It seems like you have a defective voltage regulator

Yep, above 15 concerns me. if you are reading that while actually toughing the battery post, not the cable, then this points to an alternator issue.

Replaced alternator. Same reading. Suspect voltmeter problem

Fault finding by replacement gets expensive fast... get a multimeter and learn how to use it.

With a multimeter, what is the voltage at the alternator and what is the voltage at the battery

At ;

Engine off
Engine idling
1000 rpm
1500 rpm
2000 rpm

My 2005 sea ray 4.3 Alpha 2PC. Keeps blowing ignition switch will start and run but blows when under way

your better off starting your own thread so it dosent get lost.
Ign fuse is normally 20A, is there anything connected to the ign circuit that didnt come from the factory?
