Hi, we are from the UK but currently live in Greece, have a sailboat at present, but this is now for sale, we are viewing a 1986 460 with twin Detroit diesels 450 hp each one. Any tips reviews or any other information appreciated.

Knowing what fuel costs in Europe and seeing you enjoy a sailboat currently, I hope you know how much fuel those Detroits burn.

Have to agree the thought of the cost to run her over there makes me cringe:) Anyway, good luck hope it works out well. Where from originally in the UK I'm from Boston?

Originally from Eastbourne via herts and then Suffolk to here in Greece.

You'll be burning double that per hour at cruise. Your question is very broad. Anything more specific?

I always try to learn as much about any boat I buy as possible, so engines and any known problems with the hull etc.

It is certainly much better and dryer than the UK. :)

Thought so, much like Florida is much better too:) Always amuses me when visitors (who can't wait to get here) always ask if we want to move back to the UK:) I always respond with, "do you want to go back from vaca then?"....They always think for a second, then smile and say, "well no". BTW did you get the boat?

Hi, still waiting for reply from the owner, should hear mon or tues I hope.

Hi, well the offer has been accepted, so as long as the survey is ok we are now the proud new owners of Pheonix a 1986 460 with twin Detroit Diesals 6V71s at 450 hp, any tips regarding the engines or do's and don'ts greatly received :)

Congrats on the new toy! Am sure someone with diesals on here will help you out, they are a very helpfull bunch. We just have gas gusslers on our 340 and boy does she like it:)

6-71s are great engines, but make sure you have an engine survey done as part of the regular survey.

Already booked with the regular survey, got fingers and toes crossed, hate the waiting part. Just want to go and play :)

Hi all, the survey came out terrible, decks and topsides of the scale on moisture meter, impact damage on the port side the surveyor found it by interior damage to bulkheads, the engines needed a lot spending on them, steering seized and countless other defects which amounted to more or less the boats value, so we pulled out, the owner still thought his boat was worth a lot of money and his reply was all boats need a bit of work. that was more than a bit of work.
Found a Sunseeker 31 offshore with new engines and bought that instead. Shame as I really liked the Searay.
Thank you everyone for your replies.
