SORRY FOR AMKING A SECOND POST ALREADY..BUT..

Ok. I took the boat out yesterday and it starts up jsut fine..But it doesnt have alot of power.. seems like its only running on a few cylinders or something... when i try to give it alot of throttle, it doesnt wanna go any faster but the valves start shattering.. Im not sure if a tune up or what Can be done... And someone told me to change the antifreeze in it but I didnt see anywhere to put it... can anyone here help me.. I was looking for a manual online for it its a 120hp mercruiser.. but havnt found anything..

Thanks
Terry

Well this is a long shot but my first boat if if you want to call it that was a seadoo bomraider. but it was a jet boat. I had the same problem and they said i ad seaweed stuck in the intake or impeller or whatever the hell jet boats got. they finally told me that its previous owner had sunk it and theres an electrical problem somwhere that they could not fix.. I now have a lawsuit with them to get a refund...

But if its shaking and no power it sounds like you are losing compression in a cylinder.. that was the final outcome of my last boat. full trottle it does nothing and boggs? than slowley takes off.. then eventually dies in the middle of tampa bay.. long story..:)

actually it doesnt shake.. starts and drives i htink like it should and doesnt give that bog down.. like trying to give out.. jsut when i try to go full throttle it jsut doesnt get faster and the valves are chattering like crazy.. not the chattering goes away if i pull back on the throttle and jsut kinda cruise slower through the water.. The temp stayed normal and everythnig else seemed ok.. well i guess so. i dont know wa lot about this motor yet..... jsut hope it isnt anyhting serious..

Thanks

Pretty sure your losing comression in a cylinder. BUt i hope its not that.. good luck

Am I correct in reading that you have a 1974?

How long have you owned it?

Is this your first time out on it?

First, the jetboat intake being clogged answer isn't appropriate, unless you have a jetboat. Jet drives need a constant flow of water. Without it, they suck air which causes the impeller to cavitate and will eventually cause the little thing to self destruct.

This one sounds like a fuel delivery, timing or tuning problem. I'd start by tuning the engine up .....new plugs, new points, condenser, rotor and resetting the timing. While you are at it, check the compression and verify that the spark advance is functional.

As far as solving the problem by changing the antifreeze...........well, we used to send all the new engineers out to search for a flag pole wrench so he could lower the flag after work.

thats why i said it might not help but i had the same problem somewhat.. and i mean losing compression is losing compression an any engin that uses cylinders.. but your are right two different engins. hope he fixes it!

I can appreciate that you want to fix this thing yourself, but if you don't have enough experience to know where to start, why not just get some help - (ie: a paid mechanic). That may be cheaper in the long run.

This could be an engine that is just plain shot and can't develop power, it could be damage in the outdrive or linkage. It could be a bad (spun) propeller. And, it's probably a little of each. You can start changing parts and see how many you can change before you determine that a total rebuild or replacement is the only thing that will fix the problem. You should really buy the right answer first. Then go to work if you want.

Yes I jsut got it... actually aquired it...but. yes its a 1974... im gonna see if the guy up the street will take a look at it for me if i cant figure it out...I jsut hope i can get this fixed.. would make for a reallly boring summer.. haha.. You guys here are great. thnaks for all of the input

Thanks

talked to a gu down the street that works on boats and told me to change the plugs, point, ect.. and set the timing... did that and seems to run good and no valvle tapping..."out of the water" so far.. but going to try and get it out on the water Sunday and see how it goes

Good call, Frank. Guy up the street agrees with you.

Yeah and hes a really nice buy "Boat Doctor" is his business. but he said that would save me the hourly charge of him coming down.. buuuuuttt... if all else fails.. I know where he lives now too..

Thanks to all of you.. will keep you all posted.

Tappets might need adjustment - lobes on camshaft could be worn a bit - happens with the smaller motors.

update

Hey guys. got the boat running good.. Took it out last SUnday and Had my girlfriend drive it and I ended up needing to adjust the timing more.. and after it warmed up it ran great... Would still love to get manual for the boat though.. Some things on there I dont understand., Like for example on my bass boat that had an outboard Mercury Black Max 150hp. To get the boat to plane out I had to get it to a certain speed and then adjust the trim.. and it jsut kinda skimmed on top of the water... Well with this boat as long as I leave the trim all the way down I get alot of speed but when i try to raise it doesnt do what the other boat did.. Now Im new to this so maybe Im not supposed to do that or im doing something wrong.. Now on my trim control.. there is an In and Out button.. that raises and lowers the trim... then right above that there is a button that jsut says UP... it doesnt seem to do anything... Anyone got any ideas??

Thanks Again
Terry

trim all the way down will make you go slower (not exactly but it will make the bow lower).. the higher you raise the trim the higher the bow will rise.. i cruse around mid trim.. if big waves come and i want to get over them without the boat jumping up and down i adjust up so im cuting through the top of the wave instead of bashing thorugh it with the bow..

I tried to lift the trim like I did in my other boat but it seemed to sound like the motor was out of the water or something ..jsut didnt sound right. Ill try it again this Sunday when I go out. I gotta figure out what that UP button was for.. now thats bugging me..

Are you trimming the outdrive or do you have trim tabs? I believe your both talking about seperate things.
