I have a small leak from a raw water hose on my 5.0l MPI. On the forward, starboard corner of my starboard engine, there is a box that has a fuel line coming into it on the forward end, as well as raw water in and out on the aft end. It is a black box and I can't figure out from the Mercury manuals what it is. Anyway, the raw water connections are held snug tight in the box by a sort of strong back (hose on top and bottom with a captured nut in the middle that tightens down on a stud) and nothing else. Well, evidently, I bent the top hose when I was changing the exhaust manifold gasket and now there is a small leak.

So what is this thing?
Can I buy just the strong back?
Can I buy the stud (I have now broken it off using star torque)?

All info is welcome as I have to send the admiral to the dealer tomorrow to see if they have these parts while I'm at work. (This will be fun - not.)

Theres the pic.

Sounds like your COOL FUEL III disaster. The box houses your electric fuel pump and your fuel filter. Raw water runs through to cool the fuel. Much has been written about the problems with CF III. Suffice it to say that they should be replaced (I haven't done mine yet), but it ain't cheap at around $900 per engine.

This is mine...

Oh, and thanks for reminding me I need to drop 2 more boat dollars on two of these in the not-too-distant future ;-)

Thank you. That helps. Now I just have to see if I can buy the strong back and the stud for it. I haven't yet had any problems with respect to paint flakes (luckily).

Oh, and my Mercury manuals show the cool fuel on the port side of the engine... And the pic looks a LOT different.

We've got the same engines, and they are located in the same spot on my boat.

It cools the fuel? Before or after the pump pressurizes it? This is interesting for a carburetor guy...

Couldn't tell you that Steve. Don't know.
