Hey guys. I've been thinking about trying to sell our boat for some time now & kept from doing it thinking we might start using it more. I've decided today to go ahead with it.

We are a family of 3 & it seems like nobody ever wants to go out on it, the weather isn't right, or the lake water is crappy (which it has been all summer). Not to offend anyone from Iowa, but the boating (around here anyways) sucks at best. Our lake, Lake Icaria, gets this algae bloom on it several times a summer & it turns the water as green as green paint. When it's like that, the water by the shore has the look & consistency of paint. No joke. Lovely place to go boating.

The water is always a shade of green to begin with, but this years been bad. The lake is very busy every weekend & I don't understand who would want to go swimming, tubing or anything in Pea Soup, but they do. I've put a lot of work & love into fixing up our old boat up & honestly LOVE it & REALLY HATE to sell it, but if we're not going to use it, why have it? I've got an idea what to advertise it for but don't know if I'm in line, so if you guys would take a look at my album pictures & tell me what you think it might be worth it would be a big help to me.

Here's some info & some of the work I've put into it: 1979 Sea Ray SRV195, around 700 original hours, Mercruiser 260 & Mercruiser 260 outdrive, lots of teak wood accents including floor storage with a teak cover, hydraulic trim tabs, new swim platform with new 3 step Windline ladder, new premium quality lounge seats, rebuilt rear seats including the stands, new Teleflex Lido SS gauges, refinished dash boards, detachable face am/fm/cd player, 4 new marine stereo speakers, engine runs strong & is very clean, same with the outdrive.

I have the ORIGINAL bimini top which is in near new condition as well as the ORIGINAL full enclosure that is also in new condition. I found that under one of the seats after we bought it & it was still in the original bag, never taken out (score!). My next project was to but new carpet in it, but it would last a while yet.

To much to list but you get the picture. The trailer is a 1988 Shorelander tandem axle trailer. Good bearings, new wheel seals, tires, & had the rims repainted last year. Honestly a very nice & stout trailer.

All around a hell of a good old boat. Going with it is a new 2 person tube & rope never used, life jackets, etc, etc. Be honest & tell me what you think I could get for it, I won't get offended.

I originally gave $3300 for it & after all the upgrades, new parts & work I was thinking about asking anywhere between $4500 or $5000 for the whole package, but don't know for sure.

By the way, if anybody's interested, contact me. I'd rather see her go to a CSR member than anybody else. And yes, I'm kinda being a crybaby & a grouch, but nobody at my house wants to hear it, so it falls on you guys! As usual thanks for your help & info.

Chris,
Say it aint so. I know it can be a pain to work the boating details out but it's paid for.
If you have to sell then heres my thought.
I paid $1700.00 for Old Skool with 2 years on the rebuilt engine and 1 year on the outdrive. I redid the interior, and extended the swim platform. Total cost for parts, no labor, was about $850.00. Replaced the wheel bearings on the trailer $50.00.

You have a bigger engine in the 260 and many dash improve ments along with the interior. Your trailer is better then mine although I like bunks over rollers. Your came with both tops and mine only has the ribs and the canvas is gone.

I would ask $4,500.00 for Old Skool and be pretty firm about it. The only reason I got her for $1700.00 was because the owner's wife didn't want to pay to store it in a shed in Wisconsin for another winter. His original asking price was $2300.00.

Dont take this the wrong way but...............

If you run an ad for your boat, Please learn to use paragraphs!

I couldnt read your post like that and im sure im not alone.

Point taken.......hope it's easier to read now.

IF I were you and I owned her and had storage I'd winterize her and put her away. Two reasons: 1. this is a good time to buy but not to sell. 2. a year or two from now you all may have the bug to hit the water again - if not then sell.

You're in Iowa, are you surrounded by agriculture? My guesss is that all the nitrogen and phosphorus run off from corn & beans combined with the overuse of lawn fertilizers has caused your algea bloom?

Hey Chris, I would'nt sell her either. 5000 buks is a fair price, and the ad you wrote, this dum ole ironhead could read just fine. Have a good day..

Thanks guys. Struggling on what to do, but don't want to rush into anything just yet. I think all your prices are about right, between 4500 & 5000? Going to think it over for this week.

I totally agree with you KRB64. I have no doubt that it is caused from runoff from the fields. The lake is a watershed lake & the stream that feeds it runs right by our house which is surrounded by fields.

I look at all you guy's pictures with your blue water & get "green" with envy.

I also say keep it. However, my driveway looks like a used car lot and my basement resembles a motorcycle dealership so I'm a 'lil biased.
Like Old Skool said, it's paid for.

Not to rub salt into your wound but Dale Hollow here has a ariparian zone around it with very little development along the shore. The majority of the banks are wooded. As a result you can usually see down to between 5' and 10'.

It is a great looking boat you have and having things paid for makes them that much more enjoyable. I know how you feel though, trying to be practical.

We don't get to the boats very often at times it seems and sometimes you wonder if you should keep putting money in it. But the times that we do get out I think, yeah, I should keep doing this.

That is a bummer about the water though.

The great thing about these classics is the performance, character and quality and...paid for!
