HELP..... 6.2 > 5.7 Dealer Mistake

Has this boat had a water test yet? I see you put in some lights. You own the boat already, right?

yes i own the boat, no water test yet its been very cold here in NJ, hoping for this weekend to have her in the water and ill take few videos and upload them.

Riser and manifold quote for our boat was 8,500 CDN
You can do it yourself for 2K US

The mechanics confirmed risers and manifolds are in good shape and they were recently chnaged.

I have a 1985 Cobalt that lived in Salt water for the first 28 years of its life. It did not have a closed cooling system. While this boat had a Merc Alpha 1 drive, it is a Jackshaft Model which means the motor sat in the middle of the boat. Raw water for cooling was drawn from under the boat like an inboard. Because of this it was easy to make a fresh water flush system for this motor.

I think some boaters over-react to the salt water thing. They're boats for cripes sake. They're built to be in salt water. HOWEVER, your maintenance and upkeep procedures have to be different than if you are boating in a lake. Find out what steps need to be made and go enjoy your boat.

I wouldn't worry about trying to get freshwater cooling installed, just not worth it in my opinion. If the boat were new then yes, but that boat is 14yrs old, adding freshwater cooling at this point is not going to make any difference, plus it's not going to protect the real problem - the risers. So here is what I see as the bottom line - the boat was advertised with the wrong engine, you didn't catch that and bought it. Probably should have had a new survey done that you paid for and not relied on the dealership - but you didn't - your not the first person to buy a boat without a survey (a survey the dealer or seller gives you doesn't count). At this point you pretty much own the boat, you like the boat (it's a very nice boat - all this discussion aside), there is nothing wrong with the engine package in it, just not what was advertised. If it were me I would press the dealership to correct all the issues (which seem minor at this point) and maybe get a little $$ back on the deal. Then, quit worrying about the deal and go enjoy your new boat!

Billk has a good point.
In 1969 I sprained my ankle and went the station nurse for help. All looked good she said. Her advice was Suck it up and lace you boot up tight. All was well a few weeks later. So in that tradition enjoy the boat and know next time pay for your own survey. A good survey will point out things you will never see your self. I had a recent survey for insurance and he found things I had not noticed. Spent $500 fixing things that would not have been corrected.

Good point sir. . . The Fresh water cooling is something the dealer is paying so its a + for me. Also the dealer is paying for a new water pump on out drive new water heater new steering cable and salve solenoid to be replaced.

the survey that was done in 2018 i had called that guy and i paid for him as for my bank and insurance both asked for a 3rd party survey. Im upset at him that he didn't even catch the issue that the sales add had 6.2 Horizon, however he did write down in the survey that it is a 350 MAG so he is kinda off the hook.

The dealer is also looking to find out the difference in engine and will most likely get some $$$ back but won't know until Monday since he will be out of the office on a sea trial in Florida. I do like that the dealer is reaching out to me and is keeping contact so they get a + . I should have the boat back either today or tomorrow.

Thanks BillK.

So if they are doing all of that and giving you some $$ back, I would say you are coming out better than if it had the 6.2 engine in the first place. You can't expect a 14yr old boat to not have some issues, but sounds like they are getting corrected - and really a 14yr old water heater doesn't owe anybody anything. Your going to enjoy that boat, it looks good, big enough to enjoy a weekend on and small enough to single hand. The 5.7 / 350 Mag with a BIII is solid, just stay on the maintenance, especially with the BIII.

So the 2018 survey was done for you and you had a copy before you finalized the deal? And that survey odorrectly identified the motor? If I were the dealer I’d admit to the mistake in the listing, but point out that your due diligence correctly identified the motor, so you shouldn’t have been surprised when it arrived.

Correct, I am just happy to hear that the dealer is doing something about it :)
