Hi All,

First time boat owner here (not counting my canoe) ;-) Just bought a new 2007 185 Sports with the upgraded 4.3L Merc. My wife and I have lived on Aquia Creek for a few years and have been looking forward to finally getting a boat. We can't wait to pull it out of the boatel in April and start using it... Looking forward to this forum.

Welcome
We run past Aquia nearly every weekend. Now that my big diesel girl is winterized (shrink wrap goes on this week) I too am looking forward to Spring...March 15th is the target date for spring haul, annual maintenace on the hull, running gear, touch up the bottom paint and then back in we go. C'mon spring

From the West Coast, welcome and congratulations on your new boat! Every time I walk on my dealer's showroom floor, I admire the 185.

P.S. I just noticed that I already welcomed you once. :smt101

Congrats!!! You'll have a blast and will now get to go through some of the goofs that all of us have went through with owning your first boat. Thinking back I dont know how many times I drilled myself the first day about remembering the plug and I still forgot. :smt021

As for the wait, It would drive me crazy. :smt101 I would have to trailer down to FL.

I found this course and post very informative

Thanks for the links Mike...will definitely check those out. Our local Power Squadron is having a Boat Smart class in Jan. which we are taking. They hold it at our Marina which is a mile from the house, so it makes it very convient.

Greg,
Going through your manuals is a really superb first step. I am still making my way thorugh the series of pubs that came in the equivalent of a carry-on suitcase for the 420..and a whole second suitcase for the SR Navigator.
I assume you have boated on the Potomac before, and I don't mean to frighten you--but the river can turn on you in a hurry. Part of the reason I run a 420 is because we got caught in a small craft advisory last season off of Coles Point and the waves were violent enough to get the 320DA we owned completely airborne....at 9 knots SOG. Wife was OK with the bigger diesel powered 420 after that experience. Learn to watch the weather and always check the weather on your VHF before you depart the Marina. We got caught at Tims II last year in a severe thunderstorm and the Potomac went from zero to 60 in no time at all. I was pushing through 3-4' with 35 knots sustained on my bow heading north, with a small flotilla of smaller boats following the 420's wake.
The Potomac is a wonderful place to boat..you just have to plan ahead and put safety first, always. But that is boating in a nutshell, anywhere. Look forward to seeing you out next season.120 days until I re-commission. And counting.
regards

Skip... Great tips, appreciate that. We have been on the Potomac a few times in a friends four winns and never ran into any issues (all very nice days) but keeping an eye on the weather will be a top priority for me. Thanks again....
