We find if we go 10 miles out we hit the sunshine and can run most of the way back. I just will not run fast in the soup.
We do the same. Also less traffic further out so you do not have to mess with the autopilot to dodge fisherman.
 
Around Sheboygan WI guys with the big rig 14ners are out in 10+ miles with no electronics. Got close to a boat who flagged us and wanted to know with way was west! So foggy they did not trust their anchor. Wonder how many circle they made.
 
If you can see your propwash... that ain't fog :)

Motoring along in the fog at a slow pace is actually kind of relaxing... other than being on high alert for those that aren't! That's a heck of a line ahead of you.

That's a good point. I never thought of running that far out. May try that this year....
