If you know the brands and what you're looking for then sure. If not you might want to find a local shop as it is hard to tell quality from just pictures and prices. Watch out for great deals on closeouts. If you need more of the same color you may be out of luck.

One other thing to note is most local "fabric" stores will not have a good selection of marine quality vinyls.

I know the best known brands but they are expensive. this place writes the standards it meets and is not super cheap I think.
Looking at a sample and letting upholsterer see it but I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the stuff on e bay

The best I can say is that I have good and bad experiences. Not with the sellers but when it arrived it was not completely what I was expecting. I have also gone back to get more of the same color to match at a later time and it was not available.

You mentioned letting an upholster see the sample. If you are working with an upholster why not ask them to provide the materials even if you are not having them do the job. Some will be happy to sell the materials for a small mark up.

Rather than taking a chance on EBay, try keeping an eye on Sailrite for vinyl prices.
Looking around on the Internet, it seems like their price for vinyl is pretty reasonable.
If it turns out you need a little extra you’ll know you can get it from them.
I’m going to be ordering some from them in a couple of weeks to recover the seats on my kids 18’ Bowrider.
This will be my first time attempting to sew seat covers so I want to know I can get a little more if I screw up a couple of pieces.

Give me a buzz... I can get some for you since your local.

I've bought marine vinyl from Joanne Fabrics with great results. Prices are good and it has held up 10 years in the cockpit with no cracking or sun damage. I do leave my top up though.

thanks
I am looking for the interior of my boat. I was thinking faux leather type.

The interior is a lot more forgiving than the exterior that is constantly being exposed to the worst elements. Most materials suitable for home use will work for the cabin.

It's the cushions and they are certainly stained but vinyl roofs and walls are perfect

Greetings

As a do it your selfer it is most likely that the fabric you buy on line will meet higher standards than your work will. Seriously the quality of the fabric I have bought on line far exceed the quality of my skills.

If you are not going for show quality, on line materials are more than acceptable (imho).

I have supplied my upholsterer with materials purchased on Ebay and have not had any problem.
