Joann's Fabrics is selling Sunbrella for amout $16/yard. I have been thinking of buying a cockpit cover but may instead by the canvas and pay someone to do the sewing. It seems like a pretty straightfoward project since it wouldn't require zippers. Probably save a few hundred bucks.

Wondering if anyone has done this successfully.

Do you know how to make the template?
Not sure why you think you're going to save money...you're going to pay someone to do the sewing...that's what the canvas shop does...

Oh I would never say it is a straight-forward project. To get the curvature of the windshield alone sounds tough. I just had a custom one made and there are all sorts of cutouts and darts, and it is alot of material to be working with. Good Luck!!!

Check with these guys for a ready-made one, you install the snaps- www.greatlakesboattop.com

There are lots of projects worth doing yourself, I don't think you would save much after all is said and done.:smt009

I made all new canvas for my boat and a few others over the past couple of years. Don't try to tackle a job like this if you don't have a lot of time and patience. You can save a ton of money but it's much more difficult then you think. I have to give the professional canvas guys a lot of credit for what they do. It ain't easy! Mark

I bought a book and a used sewing machine-made a few small projects before tackling the cockpit cover on my old Formula. Not easy coaxing all of that fabric thru the machine. I had alot more time than money at that point in my life. I'd reccomend buying a book and reading up on the process, then decide if you want to tackle it, or let your checkbook do the job.
