Hardwood Floor Installation Questions

Jim,

I PM'd you my phone number. Let's talk...

It sounds like you and I have arrived at the same conclusion regarding the type of floor (engineered) and the installation (glue down).

I was going to use a Bruce floor, but I may go over and look at the Mirage floor you described, as there is a Mirage dealer near my house.

I will talk to you soon, and I will post more as we begin the installation.

Shenanigans ....carpet removal is tedious. The carpet is bonded to the floor with a fiberglass or an adhesive that makes it a bear to remove. You will have to scrape the fibers out of the adhesive. There is no underlayment, and I did not put one down.
Regarding the step down, I did not treat it with moulding. When the carpet is removed from the face it exposed a wood surface that I sanded.
More difficult was the hatch openings that I used floor moulding on. Problem is you have to be careful when opening them as the pull handle is on one end causing stress on the other end potentially cracking the moulding.

Glen,

Did you butt the wood right up against the carpeting on the moldings and bench area? I do not see any quarter round molding along the carpeting, so I assume that is what you did. Are you worried about expansion?

When I removed the carpet there was effectively a "gap" under the carpet on the vertical surfaces. Obviously the flooring carpet was put down first at the factory. The engineered hardwood I have is 1/2" thick and was a perfect fit into that gap. So I did my best to trim the edges to fit into that gap but not bottom out at the back. So far the expansion has not caused any problems so maybe I managed to leave enough gap. However the trimming is a lot of work - especially with my era of Sea Ray where everything is curved. I made templates for the entire outer edge and had to cut every piece of flooring except 2 that went down as whole planks.

Hey Glen, You CSR pics are not showing up again. Did you move thse to your photo Bucket account yet?

Got some samples today for Mirage engineered hardwood floor...thinking about a Maple floor with an Auburn finish. Meeting with installer on Saturday.....thanks to Jim.

Met with the installer that is doing Jim's boat. He is doing an aweome job, and will be doing my boat next. I have not see the stairs yet that he is making for Jim's boat, but they sound like they will look great.

Waiting anxiously for Jim's boat to get done, so he can start on mine!

Eric, what will it cost? I am also interested and close by in Mystic with a similar boat. Thanks.

I do not have any photos other than the attached photo of the floor prior to installation that Jim sent me. Hopefully, Jim will post some more photos. I will get photos when the installer starts on my boat. I do not have a cost yet. Waiting for Jim's boat to get done before working out a price.

Wow, that looks great, thanks for posting. I would really like to get an idea of the installed cost. I can then figure out if i should keep dreaming or get the contractor info!

That wood floor looks GREAT! We have a 310 Sundancer and are considering putting cork flooring down inplace of the ugly rose-colored carpet. Any thoughts??

Laying down floor template in the salon and v-berth. Installer uses balsa wood, and a glue gun to make a template of the floor and the hatches. He used the template he made for Jim's boat, but interestingly enough, the width of the area in the salon was about an inch wider in my boat...so he needed to widen his template, and reposition the hatches.

Finished pulling up the carpet this weekend, and cleaning (most of) the glue off the floor:

It took about 18 - 20 man hours to get the carpet up, and clean the glue. We had to chisel the carpet off the floor, because if we pulled on the carpet, it would simply tear, or only the top layer would come up, and the base of the carpet would remain. We had to apply several coats of solvent to get the glue up. The process is to roll the solvent on to the floor, wait 1-3 hours to let it work, then scrape the glue up off the floor.

Boy those pictures look familiar. I just finished ripping up mine, it took about 16 hours to get it all up. I didnt do the solvent thing, I hit it with a grinder and DA sanded it. There was a fair amount of fairing to do to get it to the point I could seal it. Boy, your floor does look nice ! Thanx for posting.
