Has anyone else seen reserved docking for the handicapped? On our lake there are public town docks which are free for boaters to use and shop in town. There's no harbor master or anything, it's like a parking lot at the mall. On busy weekends, there can be a long wait for a spot.

Over the winter the town designated one side of one pier as handicapped. Painted the poles blue and put up the wheelchair sign. The marine patrol reportedly just started ticketing ($250) for docking there without a placard. But not a lot of people have handicap placards (vs. license plates)

There's no special handicapped services, just reserved spots.

Another example of Political Correctness run amok....Kind of like braille keypads on an ATM at a drive through! :smt021

Save us from ourselves!!!

I agree - it's not the most popular pastime for folks in chairs or
handicapped. Too much jumoing around and navigating the dock to boat and vice versa

Out of curiosity, other than the blue pole and the sign, what other modifications make the dock-spot handicap accessible? Do the tides not go up and down in that area? Is there a hydrualic lift? :smt017

What I'm getting at is, just because a person has a physical disability, that shouldn't preclude them from waiting for a spot to dock. From time to time, We all have to wait for a spot to dock. Before you know it, everyone is going to have a blue HC sticker hanging from their antennas!

Don't get me wrong, I am all for equal access. My Mom and Dad (rest their souls) we're both SEVERELY handicapped. Yes, they had the handicapped plates on their car. When I drove them to the doctors, stores, etc, I would ONLY use the handicap space if they were getting out of the car with me. And I mean both of them. My mom was in a wheel chair, and my dad was bent over with every vertebrae in his spine fused. If just my mom was coming in with me, I would park in another spot, and wheel her in while dad would wait in the car. When dad had to come in with us, (restaurant) I would park in the handicap spot so he would have less to walk.

This has been a pet peeve of mine for a long time....it has become one of the most abused priveleges...IMHO...

Rant off.....

OSD9 nothing makes the spots handicapped accessible. The pier is the easiest to dock to because it's the last one and open beyond. Because it's the last one it's the furthest from the parking lot and the town. The only real benefit is not having to wait in line for a spot. There is a lot of discussion about this on our lake website.

It's a dam controlled lake so our "tide" is about 2 feet, high tide is May and low tide is October. These docks are fixed height like pretty much every dock on the lake.

At another town dock, on the other side of the lake, the town did allow an islander to install a mounting for a Hoyer lift. He wanted to take his handicapped brother to his island home. This was at the islanders expense and there was no reserved space.

Well then, I need this everywhere I go....being a "Bald" man, I can't spend the extra time in the sun.....so waiting for a dock spot is detrimental to my health.....

Sorry Dominic...you'll have to wear a big straw hat and wait behind me

The next thing will be "Reserved For Expecting Mothers" I think that sign is pink...

That's crazy, just crazy. :smt021 Our tax dollars hard at work. These people who write these stupid laws need to be fired.

My buddy built a power yoga studio in a small town. the town made him build ramps and bathrooms, the whole 9 yards, to make it handicap accessable. This is POWER YOGA. anyway, he found a loop hole that allowed him to advertise as a public service in the local paper and the town had to pay for it. Full page ad for "FREE POWER YOGA TO THE HANDICAP" 3 years and no one has taken the offer. I think he made up for the $20k he spent on the modifications by now.
