PJ, I have two HX471SB'S. They are a little pricey but we use them around Marinas and small towns. It is nice to be able to get am/fm sometimes. We put one in the Ditch Bag as well. JC
See what BOE has and try and order from them as they keep up our(CSR) Site. :smt038

I have had good experience with Consumer Marine Electronics and with Standard Horizon.

Note: It is illegal to use a marine vhf radio ashore unless you have a specific license to do so. They are for marine use only.

Thanks. I will check BOE as I'd like to support a company that helps support this board.

I have a similar (if not exactly the same) Standard Horizon. No problems whatsoever. Good range, good battery life, durable, etc. Two thumbs up from me.

I have had a Standard Horizon HX 270S for about 2 years now. I carry it constantly in the summer from boat to boat and it has never failed me. It's a great unit and that looks to be a pretty good price although I think the 270 and 370 are being phased out...

Standard Horizon here also, both handheld and Fixed (class D)
Many don't realize, Standard Horizon is Yaesu...makers of Amature radio equipment for years

Consumer's Marine is local here in NJ. i have bought stuff in person and via catalog and have had good experiences. just watch the prices. they are NOT always the best out there.

The HX370 is one of the best deals going on a handheld. what I actually like most about it is they include an alkaline battery tray. You can always keep some extra batts on the boat to power the unit if the nicad goes dead. You should also look at the HX270, all the same features except the strobe and a few bucks less.

I have had the Uniden Mariner for 4 years now. It keeps a charge all year long. I have to run it out at the end of the year and recharge it. Small and a lot less than ICOM or Standard H.

When the rechargeable battery crapped out on my Standard Horizon, SH wanted $100 for a replacement! You can buy an entire radio for $109 around here. Other than that, the radio was OK.

I do know you can get replacement batteries cheaper from other sources but I just thought a hundred bucks for a battery was a screwin' to put it politely.

Thanks everyone! I just ordered the Standard Horizon HX 370S from BOE. Appreciate all your help.

Speaking of handheld batteries, where can you get a replacement NiCad for an HX350S without paying $100?

Any help would be appreciated!

Amberjack: I know when I whined on the SRO board about the $100 battery, someone replied with a web site or something telling me where I could get a battery on the cheap. Sorry I don't recall where that was. I just recall the implication that I'm a baffoon for not knowing how to get cheap batteries. I don't think Batteries Plus would have it. You might try Googling the number on the battery. By the way, I AM a baffoon. A second generation baffoon as a matter of fact.

Dennis, Thanks for the reply. Mine died last year and I've been doing the alkaline thing (thankful for the alkaline battery holder) since. What a pain. I'll try googling the number as it sure was nice just being able to drop the radio into its recharging cradle and have it good to go the next day!

I did the alkaline thing too until I got in a situation where I had to install mixed batteries of different brands. That caused the batteries to leak, I guess, and after that the radio wouldn't work. I tossed it. My new boat has a built-in and I no longer have a handheld. Since I have an inflatable kayak now, maybe I ought to get one so I can call the mother ship.

Yes, I recall that thread. Get over it already, I can't find the batteries at wal mart when they're in front of me at the check out counter, so you in good company ok.

I just wanted to report that I ALREADY RECEIVED my order from BOE! Now that is what I call service :smt038

Sent the battery from my HX 350S (CNB350) off to a place in PA. today for a $39.95 rebuild - upgrading from NiCd to NiMh. The cheapest replacement I could find was $92.50 so I decided to give it a try. Will report on results when I get it back.
