Handheld GPS Recommendations

I'd like to get one as well as a backup, and would prefer that it have some built-in mapping capability. Doesn't have to be super deluxe, but I would think a built-in map is one less thing to lose aboard the boat or in the car.

I guess if you can download maps from your pc via usb or something, that could work as well.

So, I'm watching this thread......

Thanks for the info folks.

For my handheld I went and purchased the Bluechart to go with it. I figured if I was buying a GPS for the water, I might as well also go with the proper chart.

OK, so, we are ready to buy the Garmin 76Csx handheld but I'm starting to stew a bit about having to buy MORE Chips for this thing. How many Garmin C-map, blue whatever.. chips am I to buy in all different sizes and formats? This handheld uses the "micro SD's" Well I have already shelled out hundreds for the larger SD downloads, not to mention the same cartogrophy on the older style chips. We boat in the same area (Great Lakes) and I guess that there is no way out of this huh??? It just seems silly to be buying AGAIN the data on another chip. Shouldn't Garmin take these old ones and load them to the new media dejour? Oh, I see, it's a profit game.....

Even if you do as I do and buy the CD-ROM version you can only use it on 2 system so when you upgrade to the 3rd system have to by a new license :smt021 Do have to say I like the CD-ROM version more than the cards. Nice to be able to have it on the computer and do all you're planing then just load it to a card and go.

So, Garmin customer service tells us to send them back to them with their RFM # they gave me and they will "swap" the 2 SD cards for the micro cards, for this "service" they give us a 50% price break. Any way you look at it I'm out 80 bucks each. Oh, I see, a profit game..... I wanted to get the CD-Rom for the laptop like Chuck1 has and they don't do the 50% off swap for that....go figure.

O.K. Guys, I have the Data Card. If i understand tihs, if i used the cd i could record this to a data card and also my computer? Is this right? JC

No. In my case I have a data card(s) that Garmin will trade-in/swap and give me the "microSD" card(s) I need for this new color handheld that reading this thread has me purchasing. My old monocromatic handheld with no plotting on it just isn't going to cut it anymore. Garmin takes it back - Sends me what I need for the 76Csx - gives me credit-I save money. The CD-Download is just as it appears, you buy It (full price) and pay xtra for additional unlock codes. Then with the 76CSX with a USB port connection in the battery area of the handheld, you download to the 128mb micro card furnished w/unit and can load to your computer for the future.

Just an FYI for anyone ready to buy; West Marine has the 76csx on sale right now for a whopping $100 off - $349.
That nearly pays for the Bluecharts.
