The title explains it all. The main purpose is for ditch purposes. Secondarily, it needs to be easy to use for kids backpacking, camping, hunting, etc.

Anyone have experience with a DeLorme PN-60? My wife found one on clearance at Cabela's for $250, but I decided to ask the salts here, first. The screen is pretty small, and my thoughts are the bigger the screen the better.

Obviously I know little about handheld GPS. All experienced opinions greatly appreciated!

Hunting/backpacking/camping could easily use a handheld. But boating on Superior would obviously require a true chart plotter. Please clarify the 'Marine' portion of your post.

Mark, Your post is fine! NO NEED TO "CLARIFY ANYTHING" . I think almost everybody understands your request. JC

As far as for a ditch bag on the boat, I think anything that will clearly, and easily give you coordinates that you can relay to the CG via VHF or phone would suffice.

For ditch purposes I would rather have a floating handheld VHF with built in GPS for distress purposes

I go out with handheld VHF and ResQLink+ Personal Locator Beacon (PLB). It is waterproof and and Transmits on a 406mhz signal for instant response by Search and Rescue. It also has built in GPS to give them coordinates to 100meters. Best $300 I can spend. I also used to conduct SAR and I would recommend to anyone. Time in water is not fun.
