Had your Magma Newport for a while? What do you think about it now?

I am going to check the clearence tonight and hopefully go with the Solaire rail mount for the transom rail. My Magma is on a pole on the swim platform and I want to get away from that. It doesn't get in my way but guest on the boat are not used to it like we are.

Mine arrived yesterday with the ignitor broken off. I lit it anyway with a BBQ lighter and did filets, corn in the husk, and asparagus. All came out perfectly. I agree with Mustangous that after reading Gary's posts I thought it might melt everything within half a mile, but it was nowhere near as hot as that.

Today I cut a piece of 3/4" plywood to fit underneath the grill, sprayed it black, and drilled 4 holes. Then I just used the feet to bolt through the plywood into the base. Then I screwed my pole mount to the plywood, and now it will mount on the pole like the magma did. After using it on the dock last night I don't think the plywood will explode in a fireball so this should work fine...

Maybe I'll post some pics later after the football/soccer game.

Great idea, Let's see some pictures. I am going to try some salmon tonight. Hope it turns out good.

Here's what my mounting job looks like:

I was too hungry after cooking to take pictures of the finished product... the grill did a fantastic job though. Corn was perfect after 15 minutes, and the steaks were great after searing for 3 minutes a side...

Amazing how much better a steak tastes when it is cooked 3 minutes/side on a Solaire vs. 20 minutes/side on a Magma.....

Yes it is. I never want another baked steak. That is for roast beef.

Although I did find a trick to good steaks on the magma... Olive oil on each side of the steak produces a crisp, charred result.

But the solaire is certainly better.

I remember reading mcdonalds endorsing solaire to get those grill marks on their burgers in 20 seconds.

Sounds great, I assume you mean the locker rail. Also what grade stainless grill did you go with 304 or 316.

Hey Brian, Yes the locker rail, then just store it in the transom locker when done. This thing cools off in no time. I went with the 304 cause we are on a freshwater lake.

Has anyone tried the infrared Magma grills? My neighbor (at home and also at our marina) just purchased one of the infrared Magmas last weekend to mount on his Bluewater, but I havn't talked to him to see how he likes it. Just wonder if other have tried them.....

I have the regular Newport....

I have the Magma Newport Infrared. Tried it this weekend. Good...seemed hotter and more even cooking. The infrared grates are removable if you want to just grill traditionally. Not designed to be closed and cook on high or medium...only cooks low closed.

Bad...more stuff to clean.

Finally moots the Magma/Solaire argument though, what little of it there was...

Is that grate upside down, or is supposed to be that way?

v v v v v instead of ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ?
Its uspposed to be that way. Its so the juices sit on the great and get cooked and evaporate back in to the meat. Its better than the flavor bars on the webers...

then why does the meat look like beef jerky?

I've got the Catalina - have had it for a year - and it's stood up well. I went to the Magma site today and ordered the infrared plates. You can retrofit a non IR Magma to IR, see e-mail thread below:

Hello Paul,

We have no exact date but approximately the beginning of this year.

You can measure your radiant plate and use the diagram that I attached to the previous email to confirm which one you have.

Thanks for your prompt reply. When did the "new style" radiant plate come into production? I bought my grill in August of last year.

Thanks,
Paul

Hello Paul,

Thank you for your email.

In order to upgrade your grill to the Infrared type, you would need purchase the three Infrared Screens. You may view and order the parts by clicking on the links below:
- 10-1056L 12-inch Anti-Flare/ Anti-Blow-out Screen (Left)
- 10-1056C 12-inch Anti-Flare/ Anti-Blow-out Screen (Center)
- 10-1056R 12-inch Anti-Flare/ Anti-Blow-out Screen (Right)

Please note that you may also need to replace your Radiant Plate depending on which one you have. Please view the attached diagram for the Radiant Plate comparison.

If you have the new style Radiant Plate, you do not need to replace it as the screens will fit just fine. If you have the old style, you may view and place an order for the new one by clicking on the link below:
- 10-965 Radiant Plate

We hope the above information has been helpful. If you have any further questions, please let us know.

Regards,

Lezlye

Great, now there's no excuse... Everyone can eat burnt on the outside, raw in the middle meat.
