Had your Magma Newport for a while? What do you think about it now?

Hey guys I stumbled into this thread looking for something else and realize it's old. But I thought I would make a short and sweet post to simplify the grill buying process for the Magmas at least.

According to Magma they make 4 series of marine grills.
The Connoisseur and Adventurer are useless. They are 9"x12" cooking surface so unless you wanna mount them on a Kayak move on;)

Third type, Kettles. Well Sea Ray doesn't make anything with sails. So keep moving:D

The fourth which is what we should all be looking at are the Gourmet Series.

These can be broken down into 3 different models depending on size.

The Newport II which has a 9"x18 cooking surface.

The Catalina II which has a 12"x18 cooking surface with a warming rack above.

The Monterey II which has a 12"x24" cooking surface with a warming rack above.

Each of these can be bought in infrared or standard.
Never buy the infrared. As has been stated it's not infrared. It's a grate that gets full of fat and grease and has massive flare ups and is a pain in the butt to clean. First couple of times goes well. Then it goes all down hill. Also the glass window on them is worthless. The first time you cook in 5 minutes it's completely black. Why they put them on there who knows.

Anyhow I bought a Newport II infrared and hated it. Went back to the standard and love it. So easy to scrape clean with a paint scraper.

So bottom line figure out what size cooking surface you want and buy the non infrared one:D

I was thinking about getting a Magma marine kettle 3 for my Sea Ray. What’s wrong with that?

Well done...No pun intended! I've spent PLENTY of time trying to compare and contrast the Magma options over the years of buying these things! Way too complicated for what it is!

I've used the kettle 2 for years. It's serviceable. Gets the job done but has its draw backs.

Well, here we go....my experience with Magma grills has been that after the first season of use the grills wind up with hot area back right and cold area way out to the left. I've taken the burner apart, power washed, brillo's, scrubbed, put toothpicks in the little holes blown through the burner like a flute and anything else you can do to NO AVAIL! Still uneven heat. So I'm resigned to rotating food on the grill grate to get the job done. I just don't get it.

I have been down this road so many times. In the end nothing works as well as your home grill. So I just buy this for $25 at Walmart. It gets the job done. You don't feel like you have to take care of it...and its easily replaceable

Only blow boaters use kettles;)

I used to have one 15 years ago. It worked. Usually only see them on sailboats. Mine was flimsy on the rail mount.

Best is the fishing rod holder mount. Nice and solid.

Get a cover whatever you buy. Keeps crap from blowing around while underway.

I should note also since this thread was started nine years ago they are on the second gen stuff ie Newport II. So a lot of the reports of them blowing out are not so much the case anymore. I don't have any problems with my Newport II blowing out. Of course I am not operating in 20 knot winds either so YMMV.

What model do you have?

Make sure that cover over the burner is popped all the way in place and is level. If it is not or is running uphill that could explain it.

A tip for cleaning the inside at the end of the season. Oven cleaner. Throw an old shirt down in your driveway and set it on that so you don't scratch it. Spray it down (mainly the inside) with oven cleaner. Wait a bit and hose it out. If you wanna get serious you can scrub on it. Makes it quick and easy.

As for cleaning during the season every 5 or 6 uses. A $2 paint scrapper from walmart. Just pop the grates out and scrape the grease down to the bottom and into the tray. Make sure you then empty and scrape out the tray so you don't get a fire in that. Easy.

I have the Newport II which, as I stated, super hot area and cold area....just like the previous Newport. And trust me, that burner and all the components are clean as a whistle! But, on your advise I will be sure that the cover over the burner is all the way on just in case. I'm not optimistic that it will be heating evenly though.
