Had your Magma Newport for a while? What do you think about it now?

Those plates from Nagma are not "infrared". They are just metal plates that heat up and that is going to produce a lot of convective heat (the air) for cooking. An true infrared burner involves a porous ceramic plate with gras flowing over it and converts the blue color flame to a higher frequency light. Magma is suckering you all into buying something that is not truely "infrared cooking". Hot steel is not "infrared cooking".

My Newport cooked perfect skewered shrimp this weekend. No gras needed.

Isn't that a line from "A Pirate Looks At Forty"?

I dont know....I thought may it was something that was being smoked.....and after you smoke it, you think your grill is better that everyone elses....

Here's a shot of some Magma cooked ribs, these were awesome, I had cooked them for about three hours (On really low heat, wrapped in foil), then opened them up and grilled for a few minutes on each side with a bit more barbeque sauce. It was hard flipping them and getting them off the grill, the bones kept falling out.

Just bringing this old thread back up. My old Magma Monterey got damaged during Sandy.

I had the old grill for about 3 years and was very happy with it so I bought a new Magma Monterey 'Infra-Red' version.

I've had it for about three weeks now and all I can say is: This thing sucks.

Heat is very uneven, left side get's much hotter than the right, it blows out with a breeze, the ignitor doesn't work half the time, and the serving tray that clips on the front keeps falling off. Other than that it's great.

Whats worse was their customer service. I called Magma to complain, I figured there was nothing they could do, but they were completely useless.

Greg,

So, basically other than what you posted you are very satisfied with your purchase?

That's my understanding, Todd.

I think we should start a thread "Magma grills - a true POS". I've had mine (just a bit smaller version than Greg's, I think it's the Newport version but also "infra-red" POS) for about 3 seasons now. It started of great. Then it went downhill shortly after, less then a season in to it. Heat distribution is way uneven. I thought maybe it's me not cleaning it good enough. Then, I took it all apart and cleaned everything thoroughly. Guess what? That's right, a complete waste of time.

Shall I add that in anything more than 10mph wind the full blasting flame just dies with full propane tank.

I was gonna do a quick search and/or start a new thread on the best marine grills, b/c this one is going off my boat as soon as I find something really good.

My old Magma worked great. It never blew out, I could cook on it while underway, It heated evenly. It wasn't like my Weber at home, but it was great for the price and the application.

This new one is horrible. I wish the Solaire was a bit bigger, that sounds like the way to go. Plus it's cheaper.

We were out this weekend and the grill was overflowing, so I definitely can't get a smaller grill. I still have my old Magma, I may take it apart and swap the burner and igniter assemblies and ditch the 'InfraRed' plates. I just can't believe how downhill this thing went in three years, and they don't seem to care.

I have the smaller magma not sure which model but ot cooks great wind and all. My only complaint is the stainless turned yellow the very first time I used it and I cant get it back to the right color

Greg,
What's your issue with the "infrared" plates (aside from the fact that they arent really infrared technology. Just curious. I have the same grill and my only complaint is the standard with all these smaller grills... That fatty foods (like sausages, or some 80% lean burgers) cause flame ups and make your food blackened/burned.

--Nevermind... i see the issues further down-- I havent had any blowouts with my newport infrared.

I think the problems here lie in the infrared grills, I have the cabo and love this grill two yrs so far and it kicks, I replaced the kettle only because it was too small I'd love an even bigger one . Sorry no complaints here (yet)

Magma kettles cook just fine but I would have constant flame ups and blow outs. I took my kettle home and use it on the deck occasionally, it still cooks well. Have had the Solaire for 2 maybe 3 years now and have had little or no flame ups and I don't think it's ever blown out. its true, stuff vaporizes on the burners vs. flames. You really have to screw it up to not have a juicy center no matter what you're grilling. my only negative is its a little hard to clean than a kettle due to all the corners and edges, but I guess it wouldn't be any worse to clean than the newports or other non-round magma models. IIRC solaire did make a smaller and larger size IR grill. If I had to buy another grill tomorrow I'd buy another Solaire.
