Had your Magma Newport for a while? What do you think about it now?

I'm getting ready to order a grill for the boat. I've settled on the Magma Newport.

I searched the threads and found several pertaining to the Newport, but most folks hadn't owned theirs for very long at they time that they posted. People seem to have loved them when they were brand new. I want to know how people feel about their 2 year old Newports. Have they held up well? Are they still holding a flame when it gets windy? Have you had to replace any parts?

Mounts. I was going to go with a pole mount on the startboard side of the swim platform. I think I've changed my mind and will be going with the T10-580 dual horizontal rail mounts like 1stSeaRay did here instead. Has anyone using these had any problems using these mounts? Would you buy them again?

Thanks !
Michael

Funny you should ask, I was thinking about having a cookout today.... Oh wait I can't find the grill!:smt021

Sorry I could not help myself!

I have a 6 year old Magma grill, works ok with no wind. I know they have come out with some "wind proof" designs, I will be keeping my eye out to test one if possible. Bottom line, if you can "Q" in non windy areas it's a pretty good grill. If there is wind good luck. Just my experience, I am by no means an expert.

I have the Catalina and have had no issues after 2 seasons. I use the post mount on the 240SD swim platform and the rail mounts on the 370EC. I have used it probably only about 10 times each season so not sure if that will be a good indication for you. We have plenty of wind and once it is lit it staays lit.The only issue I had was having to saw off about a half inch of the bolts to keep them from hitting the transom. (and I'm glad I got the larger Catalina)

I have had mine for three years. If you can settle on the kettle version I think you will be happier. It does a better job at getting the heat to the meat.

I changed my regulator to the one that comes with the Catilina to get more fire and a hotter grill. Still has a favored hot spot far to left. Everything lean or lots of flare ups. Once the flare ups start grilling on a Newport is no fun.

I will be happy with my Newport as I have already spent the money on the grill, mount, upgraded regulator. I am just careful with food selection. I like kabobs and kabobs cook fast on one end and slow on the other. All the turning and flipping drives me crazy.

We've had the Newport for 4 seasons. Ours also has a variation in grill temp. We have it mounted on a pole on the swimplatform. I'm not wild about the transom locker location. It strikes me that it would seriously impact seating on the stern seat while cooking was going on.

I like my Newport. I do like the size of the Catalina better, but oh well. I just got a 4.25LB tank(smallest one on this page). It will eliminate carrying the small tanks in the transom locker. I can just put this in there and hopefully last me all season.

3rd year w/ Newport. While I wish at times it was larger it does tuck into the transome locker very nicley. Our best advise is to keep the grates clean and to spray the greats w/ PAM prior to cooking. Less will stick and clean up is easier. Being a potable grill it does require some basic clean up maintenance. Get the cover as it makes for less scratches in stowage. While we think it was over priced it does a good job cooking and have not had the hot spots others mentioned.

Perfect timing on this thread. I have a Kettle that came with my boat that we have yet to use, but thinking of replacing it with the Newport with the dual horizontal rail mounts so I can leave it up full time, and have more grilling area.

I know where my grill is... it is the 3 foot tall rectangular lump next to the three 3' tall round lumps next to where my back porch is buried.

I have a parker grill (expensive) but I really kike it. It performs well in wind, and is easy to clean. I bought a 11 lb. tank that lasts a full summer with a lot of grilling

Great post - I didn't think about using the horizontal rail mounts on the transom locker rail. I bought a new Catalina, unmounted so far, and have been agonizing over how to best mount it and use it. Our 360 has only 2 pole holders, the starboard one is inaccessible for grilling and the port one is right in front of the transom door (just right of the cleat in photo below). And they are both inside the canvas so we can't leave the grill mounted while the canvas is up. I can store the grill in the transom locker, and if I mount it on the transom rail I can put a cover on it and leave it in place at the marina.

I've had my Newport for 2 seasons now. It works well. I've had no wind issues. I chose to mount mine with the double mount on the Port side. I chose this for 2 reasons:

1. It is out of the way of seating for when I am actually grilling
2. I can leave it here 24/7

I've never had an issue with this mount, even in rough seas. Link attached to previous pose with photos. Good luck!

I have not heard of these guys. Tell us more...

I think the magma stuff is absolute crap... the BTU's from the flames is way too small and all the things do is heat up the steel and you are essentially baking food... it's the wrong kind of heat. I hate the things. I want flames... not heated steel..

Wasn't there someone who posted an infrared grill? That's the ticket...

Gary look at DCS grills and see if there's one that you can remove the pedestal and fabricate the mount. I think the reason Magma is so popular is because for what it is the price point is comfortable and the fuel source is spec'd as portable and relatively safe. The really good grills are not going to allow a screw on Colman tank to be the fuel source.

I've had no issues with my Newport except the heat source is closer to the grill than my grill at home so I learn to moderate temperature and buy leaner meat.

Salmon and pizza turn out great though.
Buy the optional serving tray, take the cutting board off and use it as a pizza oven.

That salmon looks burnt... cardboard... packing material...

I like my salmon medium rare...

It's blackened...I want a bite Todd. Gary www.parker-grill.com
. I've had mine 7 years and works as new, they have a couple different mounting systems I just bought the rod-holder mount for my "new" boat. It is heavy but I have used it in high winds often and have no complaints. I had my local ace hardware order me an 11 gal. propane tank that fits perfect in a 5 gallon bucket for ease of use and safety.

I have an "imitation" Magma that I bought at West Marine in a moment of desperation. I've had it for three years, and we grill frequently. Although it is not as shiny as it was when it was new, it still works fine.

Here's a pic from last year's CSR raft-up in Still Pond, I got pretty good reviews on this pork tenderloin and steak. Maybe I'm just not as discerning as Gary

Of course, we had been rafted out for two days already, so people were ready to eat anything!

It's not I promise. It's got a spice on it and only cooked for 25 minutes.

Get your ass out of the snow and come west and I'll cook you the best cedar plank salmon you've ever had.
