Guns on your boat

We boat in Washington, BC and Alaska. We have never had the need of a gun. All you people that carry guns have you ever had to use it? If yes what was the reason?

Most have no have had no reason to use it. Even fewer are willing to discuss.

I have no desire to convince you to carry a weapon. I respect your right to make that decision for your self. I would hope you will respect my right to choose as well.

That argument is so weak!

I've actually used my fire extinguisher and my carbon-monoxide alarm has sounded. However, not one person in this forum has ever had the need to use their weapon on the boat. I've waited patiently for one sound example of a person who actually needed and used their weapon on a boat and ....NOTHING! A global forum and nobody has chimed in with a story about actually having to use their weapon. Why? You would figure with all this mayhem and chaos on the water someone would have come across one bad guy by now they had to dispatch in some sort of violent conflict?

I live in Florida and we've had a few tornadoes from time to time. Should I run out and put in a storm cellar just in case another one touches down?

Here's the story...plain and simple. I agree there's a lot of violence in the world and I might even be persuaded that carrying a concealed weapon out on the streets might be a good idea in some areas. However, I head out on the water because there is no violence out there. Just seagulls and warm sunshine. All the thugs, bullies and gangstas are all on land because being a boater is too much work.

I believe the reason you don't hear about boaters having used guns is they choose not talk about it. Most will never have to use them. As you have chosen not to have a weapon on board why do you care if somebody else does?

"However, not one person in this forum has ever had the need to use their weapon on the boat. " From This quote you are making the wrong conclusion. just because nobody shared their experience with you does not mean it didn't happen.

This is an old thread but with time on my hands I've been spending way too much time on the couch perusing the old themes.
I had a scary encounter several years ago in a secluded cove on the lake we used to keep or Rinker 350 on. Two boats, mine and another friend's house boat were beached. At 1:00 AM I was awakened by a couple of approaching PWCs. It was a moonless night, I poked my head out of the cabin and saw two guys about 100 feet off our stern just sitting there casing us. Ten minutes went by and they fired up and left. I returned to my rack and 45 minutes later they returned. This time my friend on his boat got up and we both decided to show ourselves and turn on some lights. The guys on the PWCs high tailed it out and did not return. This was one of the rare times I did not have a fire arm with me and figured I'd use the flare gun if need be. I actually rarely bring a firearm on board it really depends on where we will be cruising and if we will be out on the hook or in a secured marina. Overall in NorCal the threat is pretty low and we usually travel in groups anyway.

Try dragging anchor in a dead of night squall being surrounded with fishing boats who are also dragging anchor. It seemed everyone was armed. Many were firing in the air (an assumption) to warn other boats away from hitting them. As if any other boater wanted to hit another boat at anytime, but particularly in that mess. This was 20+ years ago in a small anchorage off Cook Inlet AK. A fun night. No one got sleep past 1 am. Then just before dawn (~2:30 am) it was off to the fishing grounds for 24 hours.

I recall seeing something in a marine publication about firing a "gun" at one minute intervals to signal distress ??? Anyone else remember seeing the same ?

There was a story back in 09 about people being robbed on Lake Erie, for that reason I carry on board I also teach CCW and firearm classes as well. I carry everywhere I go. Also never had to draw my firearm.. Pray I never have to!

I live in NJ, we can’t carry here, so I have no carry permit (unfortunately). But I travel through many states on my boat as we travel on the East coast, so it would be hard to carry anyway. But what we do have onboard is a “non lethal” gun that shoots a high powered pepper ball. This way I don't have to put a hole in my boat either!! The accuracy and stopping force is excellent, can even get a laser sight on it, not necessary other then intimidation.

Ohh wonderful...in the time of potential impending financial distress you've given me something I had no idea I really wanted until just now..this forum can be so expensive at times :)

I'm shocked by how reasonably priced those things are. I was expecting a full boat buck.

This is a cool idea.

My friend is a NJ State Trooper. I have asked him this question before. His answer, "it's a very gray area". He even asked one of his superiors for me and the answer was the same. Bottom line is, they don't want to deal with the BS of arresting you for just having it on the boat. It should be kept unloaded and out of sight. Many of the boaters in our marina have guns onboard. Now, we did have a person at our marina arrested for having a gun on his boat about a year ago. He had a AR style gun with a clip that held over 10 shots. We are limited to a 10 shot clip here in the State of Screw Jersey. The mere possession of a larger one, even without bullets, supposedly is mandatory jail. That clip is what they concentrated on and went after him for. He got busted because he stupidly left the gun out in plain sight on a table in his salon because he had taken it apart for cleaning. A security guard on patrol saw it through the window and called the police. He spent a lot of money on a lawyer and went through a lot of misery, but avoided jail time. The bottom line is, as long as it's kept concealed and unloaded, they're not going to bother you unless you give them a reason to.

I've always been of the opinion that a firearm kept unloaded and/or locked is substantially less useful than a baseball bat in the context of self defense. If you're going to keep it locked and unloaded, leave it home in the safe...

Here in the west, I assume that every vehicle and vessel are packing. No one ever talks about it or needs to. The level of politeness is higher also.

Makes you wonder that in this day of record gun purchases and increased personal carry, Jackasses that incite road rage or personal confrontation over the stupidest stuff don't stop and think for a moment that the person that they are intentionally pissing off might be packing.
As far as guns on the boat, as far as I'm concerned, it's my second home.

As to the worry about putting holes in your boat, isn't that what hollow points are for. Lol

I am going to assume you are one of those guys that feel as though the second amendment is no longer valid. I don’t need a reason to carry a gun. It is my right and I choose to exercise it. The time you need a gun is not the time to debate the amendment. Being prepared in an ugly azz world is an extremely smart idea. I have guns for hunting and protection. I kill 2-3 deer a year, uncounted rabbits, a few geese and an occasional coyote or raccoon that makes the wrong decision to get into my hen house. I also would not hesitate to light someone’s ass up that tried to do my family or property harm. Just my 2 cents

I can agree with many points above. That being said...I am a law abiding citizen. I am an American citizen. I am former military. I pay taxes. I live under the guarantee of the Constitution, therefore, I carry at all times. Enough said.

At first I liked the pistol but upon further thought I would never carry that. My fear would be that the guy I'd draw down on and be ready to fire a CA/CS gas pellet at would draw down on my and fire his 9mm, .40 or whatever.

If you're going to go to a gunfight, bring a gun.

That's a pretty good point GFC, For those that live where guns are uber regulated I still see it as being better than a baseball bat or nine iron though. Ill stick with my Taurus Judge with OO shot or .45 Mag thank you!

I disagree... there are people out there that don’t want a gun in the house but want some kind of defense... if that pepper gun fills the need so be it...what I like about it is you can hit the floor in front of the perpetrator and it affects him ....and we all know marksmanship with hand guns sucks....
