Guns and Boats

In rapid fire - absolutely BRUTAL! Normal shot guns with pistol grips (of the 12ga variety) will give your wrist a workout (not for light wristed shooter). Short barrel shotguns (SBS) are even more strain on the wrist (again thats firing it with both hands). Plus the SBS requires a stamp from the ATF.

Good info thread!

As for me, even after 20+ years of owning and handling guns I am still just as intimidated and cautious handling one now as the very 1st .22. I own and sometimes carry but have always been taught to only pull a gun when I am firing it, period.

Many years ago I took a 12 gauge pistol grip double barrel shotgun away from a guy I arrested. The length of the barrel on that little gem was about 9.5". At that time, before we could charge possession of an illegal weapon we had to verify it was, in fact, capable of being fired. I took it to the range, duct taped it to a 4x4 post that was already there and fired both barrels separately with 00 buck. They both worked and the gun didn't blow up or anything.

Then my curiosity got the better of me and I fired it while holding it. Yowsers, that was my big mistake of the day. That hurt like a mutha so I only fired the one barrel. That was enough for me. The barrel rose as the gun fired even though I was holding it down with my left hand (gloved) and the muzzle blast slapped me in the face. Damned glad I was wearing eye and hearing protection. Ahhhh, the joys of being the rangemaster and firearms instructor. We got to play with some interesting toys.

That's a perfect example of action verses reaction. the closer the weight of the load gets to the weight of the gun the worse reaction.

Yeah, I knew it was going to kick, but I had no idea it was going to nearly launch itself. I'm just glad I had gloves on.

I just wish I'd done a pattern test to see what the pattern looked like at 10'.

Where does maritime law end and state law begins? I believe, that if you look at maritime law, you will find that weapons for defense are valid, but when in port, must be under lock and key. I am not an attorney but do spend lots of time reading. And yes, I would be rather tried by 12 then carried by 6. Where I boat, I do not see the need to carry anything, especially since there is a 12 gauge flare gun on board. It kind of hard to put out a fire that is start by magnesium and and continue the chase.

The biggest issue that I have learned with 30 years of martial arts and a instructor, chance favors a prepared mind. being aware of your surroundings can prevent most of the issue that could escalate to a problem. Best thing is to "be aware", put the booze down, and do not go macho when something comes around. Your mental attitude is your best weapon.
