Guns and Boats

Great thread... good information!

I have a concealed carry permit and carry most of the time. I always have one close which includes on the boat. I hope to never have to use it, but don't want to be in a situation where I need it and don't have one. I usually have my "favorite at the time", which is currently a G36 (Glock compact .45).

There is nothing more threatening than the sound of an 870 being racked. For that reason, it's the only weapon I have that's not kept "Condition One" or "Condition Zero". So this would work on a boat:

Do you jack one in there one handed too? That would really impress the bad guys.:smt101

Right there is what is going to bite you in the ass. Using a gun that you are not supposed to have and kill someone. Lawyers will have a field day with you saying 'you bought or modified a gun and were looking to kill someone'. Big no no, use a standard off the shelf gun without mods and at least they won't try and divert the court case in another direction.

Anybody can go buy an HK USP with a law enforcement trigger.

There is absolutely nothing illegal or restricted about it.

The pistols with the "Law Enforcement Trigger" from HK have a much heavier trigger pull.

Personally, I would get the standard trigger pull, because it will be easier to shoot. When you have to start muscling the trigger the likelihood of the sights remaining on target are diminished.

I'm not trying to be cool... if you hear that sound from me you are threatening my life or the life of my family.

I'm just saying that the sound alone can be a deterrent. :smt021

Same rule applies to my boat as it does my house..."This house/boat is protected by God, and a gun, come here unwelcome, and you might just meet both!"

P229 .40 Sig

and if I may be so bold...Southpark does it right...

"Quick Ned!!!!! Its coming right for us, SHOOT IT!!!!"

It is not unlawful to modify a trigger, at least in this state.

It's a scary thought that making a wake in a "no wake zone" could possibly escalate to pulling out guns. I think we have to do what we can to prevent situations from happening even if that just means taking it easy in the "no wake zones".

I agree with these statements 100%

Regarding guns in general, I have no problem using with the concept of using any means necessary to defend my family, however when irrational situations happen that require life and death decisions and those decisions need to be made in the blink of an eye under extreme duress, I am concerned that I may make a wrong decision. Macho attitude and slogans like "shoot first and ask questions later" or "Let God sort em out" are cool in the movies but when you hold the life of another human being in your hands, you have to be right.

I could not agree more. It's one thing to talk about it on an internet forum and a complete different animal in real life. I own a gun. I have a carry permit. I will use it to protect my family. It scares the sh*t out of me to think I would ever have to do that.

Alot of people down here carry mini-14 on board. I like my 870/fold over stock (old type) no plastic. 00 buck, slug, 00buck, and so on, /ext mag. and a mac 11( 9mm) with hollow points and a full mag .I have a carry and so does my wife. I've carried for over 40 years an never had to shoot anyone and don"t want too but I will if I have to.I'll tell you something else, sometimes it help if you know that the help is there if you need it , some how they know!,How? I can't say but they know ! being out on the water is like being out in the dessert ,you must be prepared for all eventualities..".There are a lot of good people out on the water ,and few a holes ".Why do I carry? because cops are to heavy".....Rip

N disrespect intended, but you would change your mind if you were down here:smt009

None taken whatsoever.

My Mom lives in Florida and I have been in some areas that are less than comfortable. I have also been in the wrong area of town in Chicago shopping for tail-gate supplies before a Bears game where some protection may have been useful. Luckily we were simply able to toss a 6-pack, get in our rental car, and bolt. That being said, had one of us had a gun, the prudent thing would have been to keep it hidden or bullets would have been flying.

Fortunately, unless I am on the St. Lawrence near Akwesasni there is very little chance of encountering a gun on the water, and even that would be unlikely.

Be safe.

GFC & LTD seem to have this thread locked down! (I appreciate your professional opinions). But there are a couple of things that need to be restated:
1) NEVER use a flare gun as a weapon! You might be really surprised when the flare bounces off its intended target and quite possibly starts your boat on fire!
2) NEVER display a firearm to intimidate a threat. When you are at the point of displaying a firearm you should be at the point to pull the trigger to stop the threat (because your are in fear of grave bodily injury or death).
3) Do not think that racking a slide or pump will stop the threat. You just gave up 2 seconds to the perpetrator to do you or a loved one harm.
4) Keep your booger hook off the bang switch until the muzzle is on target and you are ready to DESTROY it.
YMMV, our boat = our house and is protected accordingly!

I like the easy pull trigger also but the sights are pretty useless when using buck shot at 15-20 feet. Anything farther than that may not be seen as a threat by law enforcement. (Thats the enforcements stand in my county.)

I use buck shot as opposed to a slug. A couple BB's entering your body can have the same effect as a slug as a deterrent. The wide pattern makes up for a lot of hurried defensive movements at close range.
For long range threats up to 5 miles then I have something with a little more impact and better sighting....
