I noticed today that a green wire that is supposed to be attached to the genset strainer has broken and is no longer attached. I ran the boat and genset and it ran fine. I did not have time to go through everything and see if something did not work. I am guessing it is a ground wire, but why it is green and attached to a brass housing is confusing to me. I tried to follow the wire to see where it goes but it is impossible to tell. Does anyone have any thoughts on what it might be?

It is the bonding wire for your genny strainer. You should be able to ultimately follow it to the bolts on the transom which hold your hull zinc. Nothing to do with your genny running or not, but you need to fix asap or the strainer will not be protected by your zinc.

Exactly! Your strainer is currently being eroded away by salt water. Re-attach the wire to allow your sacrificial anode (zinc) to take the abuse.

Since the post indicated you didn't have knowledge of this, it's good timing for you to check all of your bonding wires. Every metal seacock, strainers, rudders, shaft logs, struts, pumps, etc. that have saltwater exposure should have a bonding wire. There's a BUNCH of them. They're really susceptible to corrosion, check all of them and replace with heat-shrink crimps if necessary. This can save you some big repair bills down the road.

Rob-

Now you got ME thinking...
I've got my forward ac unit about pulled out to replace tomorrow, and I didn't see a bonding wire.
Why should it be any different?

Damn good question.

Anyone know the answer?

When I was reconnecting the wire I checked everything down there. Everything else was attached. This particular wire is in a spot that gets stepped on easily when servicing the engines. I just had oil, filters. etc.. changed and was checking to make sure everything was done and all filters and belts etc where on correctly when I noticed the wire, so my guess is the mech stepped on it and pulled it apart while in the bilge. Looking at where some of the stuff is located, if it ever comes off there is no way you can reach it to reconnect it.
