Where is the best spot to put one of those magna grills and do i have enough room for one at all? Which mounting option is best to get? I went to west marine yesterday and there are about 20 different mounting options all the way up to an extra 80 bucks for the brackets? Are the grills any good?

The grills are of very high quality and there are all sorts of spare parts available for them. I have one I use at home mounted to a wood post in my back yard. On the boat, I've always used the rod holder mount with good success, but all the mounts look to be very solid.

We asked our dealer to install rod holders. Magma makes a very stable "Pow'r Grip" rod holder mount which works great. One thing to consider is where you will store your grill when not mounted. We selected the "Marine Kettle" round grill (the small one), as it clears the camper canvas hardware and fits nicely in the stern trunk.

We have the same dilema on our 280. With the camper canvas setup it does not leave enough room for a convienent rod holder type placement. After thinking for quite a bit I came up with my solution.

I am going to be having a larger rail made for the aft compartment locker so that the rail mounts will fit nicely (stock rail does not have enough room). I like this solution for a couple of reasons.... it gets any smoke a good distance away from the cabin door... and out from underneath the camper canvas if we were to have the top up. It also does not make me feel bad if I spill as I can simply wash drips overboard with a splash of water .... or the aft sprayer and I am not over any carpet :smt001

I have not had this done yet as I am still playing with the design of the rail.... possibly building the mount onto the rail as well.

Good luck.

IMHO The magma is great. I tried the rail mount, just was not right for me. I went with the post and an extension bar mounted on the aft section of my 240SD you can see it under the virtual marina. Might work for you.

We used the peg mount the same as Ms Judy. On our 280 it is mounted on the stern starboard side right by the door. It works good and you can stand on the swim platform and cook. We have the small kettle. We looked a the big rectangle grill at the boat show and would have to mount that with a rod holder. We thought we may need more grill space! We'll see!

Jeremy,
When we bought our Cruisers 2670 it '97, it did not have rails at the stern. Through the dealer, we had the factory "custom" make 2 rails for us, which matched the existing rails (flanges, angles, etc) on the boat perfectly, and they were not prohibitively expensive. I would bet that Sea Ray would do the same for you.
Good luck,

I installed Magma's little socket type bracket on the swim platform under the ladder door. I used Magma's angle rod bracket so the grill is over the water when I'm cooking. The ladder door rests on the angle bracket or stays open when the grill is in use.

I like this because it keeps smoke and grease spatters away from the boat. Though its not likely, if the grill were to flare up out of control, I would not have a problem blasting it with a fire extinguisher. The grill is very good quality and as mentioned, replacement parts are available if needed.

I was thinking about buying one of these grills and installing it in a rod holder. After thinking about it, I decided not to buy one. How do you prevent grease from splattering taft rails, cockpit floors, seats, etc? Seems like a grill would make a mess over time that would be hard to clean up.

sbw1: That's why I mounted mine off the swim platform. To help reduce the grease, I buy the leanest burger possible, cook on the lowest heat setting possible, and cook with the lid on. Though I don't eat brats anymore...I'd boil them in a pan of cheap beer and precook them first before grilling them. This could be done at home if you wanted or with a pan and lid on the grill.

There is very little spatter from poultry or fish, kabobs are wonderful off the little feller....

Our rod holders are installed so that they angle away from the boat a tad. We grill while standing on the dock -- haven't tried grilling from the boat yet.

We really have never had a grease problem and have cooked plenty of things. I usually lay a towel over the side to keep everything clean and tidy. It also helps keep the lid from hitting the side. We have enjoyed this mount because we can use it on the dock and while underway!

Stray Cat, I like your solution. Would you be able to post a picture or two help illustrate the rig?

Slack: I wish I did...my swim ladder is off to the starboard side.
Under the door there is a flat spot to mount the bracket that
uses the pin with the pull ring.

I used this mounting method on the integrated swim platform of
our 270.

We wanted our grill to be accessible from the cockpit but I also didn't want grease in the boat. I mounted our Magma on the starboard gunwale just in front of the bimini support:

using one of the surface mounts from Magma:

The mount has an offset support arm with four possible orientations (two holes for the locking pin 90 degrees from one another). By rotating the mount so that the arm extended over the water I was able to position the grill so it is easily accessible from the boat but hangs out over the side so any drips go into the water. Although the mount doesn't look especially strong, I through-bolted it to the gunwale using fender washers on the back and it has held up quite well.

That is exactly what we have....No grease drops on boat, but I keep a towel folded over against the boat for those "just in cases!".
It worked for us on our 240 and this 280! My problem now is I want the bigger GRILL!

So...maybe there is a way to do this without a mess. Are most of the extentions available through catelogues and boat stores or are they custom made?

Yes, I know my magma one was a standard item can't remember if I got it from boater world or west???

I mounted mine on the transom using this mount:

We do most of our grilling rafted up with other boats so I didn't want it hanging over the side. I usually put a towel under the grill but I have never had a spill. Those Magmas get so hot that most of the grease is burned off before it can collect.
