Grill Pedestal Install

The grill install went well and ended up putting it on the starboard side of the swim deck shown in the pic above. It was a big debate where to put that monster. It was just a standard thought the deck install with a 9 inch by 1/4in thick square backing plate I made. To me there wasn't a good spot to support the weight using a flush mount rod holder or the Tite-Lok top mount and keep it away from other things which would be subjected to heat from the grill.

The fun part was crawling back in there to tighten the nuts up. Once I get the snap-in carpet put on the swim deck it should help eliminate some of the slip hazard and I am working on a plug of some sort for the mounting hole to keep the toes out.

I figured it would be used occasionally then stowed once it cooled. Usually on raft ups we have sandwiches or something that can be heated in the microwave. We would also be able to use the grill this fall with the camper enclosure up for the sunset cruises and spending the night on the hook.

I will be at the slip today and get a pic of my bilge before I pump it out. I did have someone tell me it was probably a/c condensation running into the bilge but I think  that is supposed to run into the shower sump. Still learning but having a blast.

Yes - post some pics of the final install! :smt038 I am still debating as to where to put the grill. I definitely will be installing it in the cockpit deck area, probably below the starboard removable seat cushion or on the port side near the cockpit sink - haven't decided yet. I don't envy your excursion under the swim platform in the ER - not so comfortable :wow:.

Yes, the A/C condensate does run into the shower sump and is pumped out by a Rule Bilge Pump out the side of the boat. I finally figured out why Sea Ray had to do it this way. The A/C condensate drain and Shower drain are all below lake water level - water can't go up hill. So it goes downhill to the sump and gets pumped up and out the side. You can see the sump and pump / float when you pull out the waste basket under the top stair in the cabin.

Dave S came up with a great way to keep the ER Bilge Pump from back washing into the bilge again after it stops. See his thread here at the bottom of the page: http://www.clubsearay.com/forum/showthread.php?t=414&page=17

I have yet to vacuum out the bilge water and clean the area to check for leaks. Another future project...

Got my grill installed a couple weeks ago and it's great on the swim platform. (did the under the ladder cover position) and thought I'd show how I store mine. I used the area under the stern port lounger. I added some foam around the cutouts for the propane bottles. The post fits nicely in the line holders.

Well, you guys have shamed me into it.........I picked up a new grill and pedestal mount last week, and intend to do the "under the ladder cover" install this weekend. The model on display was a Force 10, but the one I got is labelled KUUMA. I guess they're the same thing from the same manufacturer, at least that's what the sales guy said. I looked at the Newport and the Catalina, but this one is sized right for me, and came with a clip-on front shelf/cutting board that looks very useful. I had a guy out in the tool room whip me up a backing plate, so now all I need is some 4200 and the six machine screws. Todd, I think you said (or someone did) that they used 1 1/4" long 1/4-20 machine screws. Was that length sufficient for a 1/4 inch backing plate, or did you just use washers?

Cheers,

Bill

Yes, I think they were 1-1/4" stainless 1/4"-20 with fender washers and locknuts.
They may have been 1-1/2" long but I don't recall. I'll search my other post and see if I put it in there.

Todd had his plate tapped out for the 1/4-20 bolts. He didn't use washers or nuts so he used a shorter bolt. You'll have to add some length if you intend to add lock washers and nuts.

Thanks, jg.

My plate is both drilled for clearance holes for 1/4-20's and tapped (actually helicoils) for 14/28's, I guess the length will depend on what I can find at the hardware store.

I even have some little plastic bootie thingies to cover any exposed threads on the underside. I've gouged myself far too many times on the end of a bolt.........what is it they say, something like "we grow too soon old, but too late smart"?

Thanks for all the help guys. jg, compared to Todd you're practically a neighbor!

Cheers,

Bill

I think you're thinking of my Cockpit table ring.

On the grill I used stainless nuts, washers and machine screws.

Here's my Post

Like many of you, I installed my grill pedestal on the starboard side of my swim platform. It has been working well there. However, yesterday I rafted with two other boats and was the middle boat. With the grill in place, it was impossible for people on the boat on my starboard to step over to my swim platform and easily move between the rafted boats. Something to keep in mind if planning a similar install.

I think I used 5/16 on mine but got the bolts way too long 2 inches I think., here is a pic of the "second" backing plate (first one didn't float so well:smt013) It measures 8X12 and 1/4 thick, sealed with 4200 inside the holes, topside and bottom side.
