Greenport to Shinnecock Inlet - Local knowledge needed please!

That was a perfect trip
Going and coming was awsome. No wind flat seas and a damn good time. Dont worry dom will give you the perfect trip this year also.

:grin::grin::grin::grin::grin:

with the NW wind you could hug the coast for a better ride.would think the land will def help you.the south shore will benefit from the north wind over a south east wind.if there is SE wind I would rethink your route or it will me a miserable ride.best of luck in your trip.

Seems that this system coming in Friday will have effects that spill over to Saturday, not in terms of rain but ocean conditions. The wind is now projected to be westerly - not strong - but could make for a crappy ride as we head into it. Considering moving the trip to Sunday morning. Thoughts?

NOAA

Fri night 8-9ft sat 5-7 sudsiding 3-5 I would def wait for Sunday. I would also really think about lisound. That's big seas.

Jonathan - Sunday calls for 2-4'. Check HERE We're changing the date to Sunday for sure.

Calling around to marinas for fuel situation on the North Shore (if we decide to go that route). Looks like the only place open at the time I'd be leaving would be Orient Point. Spoke to Bob there - heckuva guy - told me he lives 5 min away and can come whenever I need him to, even 0730 on Sunday! Gave me his cell and home number. After that, the next place for fuel is Mattituck Inlet, but the two places in there are not open for fuel yet. 30 miles west of that is Ralphs Fishing Station in Mt. Sinai Harbor. Open 8-5. Left message at Danfords in Pt Jeff (no answer there).

With what's in the tanks now, I wont make it to Mt. Sinai so if we go via the Sound, it's going to be Orient Point By The Sea Marina.

Ron,

By looking at different sources (I always use at least 3) I don't see anything I would be concerned. But, there's something that doesn't add up quite well, which is the seas state. I understand that between Thu and Fri the NE 20kts wind will build up the seas from the ocean, but when it take 90* turn and blows from the W on Sat the seas should calm down. Granted it take some time to stop that big mass of the ocean to calm, but the idea is that the worst part of the trip would be at LI shore. As you can see Sandy Hook shows 1' or less.

Heading in to the wind in this scenario does not necessary mean a bad thing. SW wind on Sun can make this in to very different ride compare to WNW winds Sat. So, for now my vote is for Sat.

One thing I can assure you (based on the current forecast) is that if you go through the LIS you'll be riding on a lake. If you leave early enough (while the nature is just waking up) you'll be in calmer W winds going Westbound in the Sound. It's only about 1-1.5hrs ride until you're protected by the skyscrapers. As you come out of the NY Harbor the "worst part" would be 1hr ride between the tip of Staten Island and Sandy Hook, which with W winds will be just fine anyway. From Sandy Hook on, you're back in the lake.

That's my take on it for the moment.

Best condition? I'll respectfully disagree and go with NO wind....

Hahaha, good one, Steve. But, in order for Ron to get this he'll need to rent a slip on LI for half the season......LOL

Thanks for the info!
Part of the reason for the day change is timing. Friday was going to be a late start from NJ to Greenport, in some serious rain (and traveling WITH the rain), arriving at the boat near dark, and then having Lillian turn around and drive back in said rain. I have a bunch of gear to stow, I need to get familiar with the boat and get ready for a "first light" departure, all in the dark. Arriving at the boat Saturday earlier (around 4pm) will ease that stress. The weather helped make the decision but it's not the sole player.

Keep a sharp eye. Took a walk on the beach this morning (Long Beach) and within a half mile saw a lot of bad stuff still washing up including lumber and a 20ft piling.

Oh, I see. In case when you don't make it to the boat Fri early enough to make your prep work comfortable it makes a difference. It's still early to tell based on the weather, but see how your logistics work best for you.

Ron, I agree with Alex... i would go on Saturday as planned... I would also go in the Ocean... The voyage is shorter, and you will save gas... I would plann on leaving as early as possible... As Alex suggested, getting there on Friday would be ideal for an early departure... The 7' seas are usually rollers and no problem. The wind is greater on Sunday, and that would bother me more...

Ron,

I would get a slip out on Long Island & say "F#%k the waves!" lol

Just kidding. In all seriousness though, the dock masters building at Danfords burned down a month or so ago. It was half way out between land & the gas docks so it may have impacted their ability to pump. I believe they are in the process of demo'ing it and possibly rebuilding. Ralph's fishing station is a better bet if you end up going on the Sound side. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1365612310.423509.jpg

Good luck whichever you choose!!

Hey ron I dunno if you finalized your day yet but best of luck and safe traveles. Remember ill be on 16 all day. Just a call away of you need anything I have enough fuel to get from ji to about fii and back so that's my range.

Heading out to Greenport tomorrow and leaving sunday at first light. Where do I start calling you - don't know where your boat is. Also, that boat got a name yet? Need a name to hail you with.

Im out of freeport about 2 miles north of jones inlet. My boat name is cacacazzo pronounced. Gagagots.

Is that like Stu-gots, or is that Sicilian for "eggplant?" I have to put your boat name in post #1 of the AC trip.

If I call you on 16 I'm just gonna say "Googootz" ;-)
