Completing purchase of a 2001 380DA. I need to get the boat from Greenport, Long Island to Manasquan Inlet, NJ. Weather permitting, I would like to run throught the Peconic Bays, through the Shinnecock Canal into Shinnecock Bay and out Shinnecock Inlet, as opposed to running the LI Sound, and I want to do it in one day. My surveyor is a fisherman and he tells me Shinnecock Bay and Inlet are in great shape in spite of Hurricane Sandy. Can anyone confirm or deny?

Currently the boat has 1/4 tank of gasoline. We are planning on departing around 0600 on April 13 and I will likely not see the boat again til around 8pm on April 12. I need to tank up before leaving the inlet, and with 1/4 tanks, I'm going to need to tank up somewhere close to Greenport, at a facility that's open at o'dark:30. Any ideas? The marina that the boat is berthed at does not have functional fuel docks at this point. Broker mentioned that he believes Picozzis on Shelter Island is open for fuel.

So here's what I need guys...
1. condition of the bays leading from Greenport to Shinnecock Inlet
2. a functioning gas dock that I can get to on about 65 gallons.

Thanks for any and all help!

Thanks Ron:
My plan was to spend some time with Active Captain and the telephone, checking on fuel availability along the route. Not sure I can make it as far as the inlet or even the canal on 65 gallons. New to me boat, don't want to take chances, esp early in the season and esp after the mother of all hurricanes tore things up.

Ron,

I can't find any recent local knowledge on the channels etc out there but I bet a quick call to Sea Tow or the Moriches CG station would work. Also, there are a couple tanker trucks that go to marinas and gas up boats out here. It's usually cheaper than the docks. The one that comes to my marina is Direct Fuel and their phone number is 631-467-2145. I'd call the marina that you're at and see if this is an option. Then you can have the tanks full before you even untie your lines!

There are a few gas docks at the canal. They might be open by the time you get there. I think one of them is the marine max surfside III facility. Try looking them up and call. The would also have the best reports on the bay.

Thanks guys. Todd, Wow, I've never heard of gasoline tanker trucks coming to boats. It's usually deemed too much of a fire hazard. Diesel is very common. I doubt the marina will allow a fuel truck to come since they do have a fuel dock (taking food off their table) - it just wont be open by the time I leave - not sure if it's damaged or just not operable yet. It would be great to have a delivery though and it can't hurt to ask.

Thanks Sal. I'll give them a call. On the way, open at 0900 on a Saturday (later than I wanted to get going) according to the website. Could be the answer. This may be more based on who's open at the time I'd need. Any "self serve" fuel docks out there? ie: you pull up 24/7, pump your own gas and pay with a CC?

What time are are you planing on leaving ? my buddy runs the fuel dock there i could call him see if he can get there early for you. or you could come out Friday fuel up and spend the nite at greenport village dock

Self serve fuel docks must b a jersey thing. I have yet to find one in ny and the only one I've ever been to was in ll. My marina in Freeport also offers the fuel delivery truck. I would call your broker and ask if they can set it up for you just this once. As for oaklands fuel dock. Its about 300 yards west of shinnecock inlet. Pre sandy they were open 365a year. They supply for most of the local fishing vessels. I do not know what there condition was after sandy. But its just a phone call away. I fueled up my 270da with 7.4b3 held 100gls. I made it from shinnecock to Jones inlet with about 25gal to spare smooth seas med load. Ok bottom. There are no fuel docks open with range of Jones inlet. I spent am hour on the phone with sea tow yesturday gathering as much info as I could regarding navigation and fuel. As for fuel. Nada and they have no idea when if you want info on nav ask away. Just gives you another out if need be. There are plenty of places you can dock up if you needed to. Alex posted a hazard (sunken something) right before exiting shinnecock inlet you might want to look into that also. Best of luck

Sal... was hoping to leave Sat morning (April 13) at 0600. Earlier on the ocean the earlier I get off, which is a good thing. That would put me at POE at the latest 0700, 2 hrs before they open on a Saturday. I can always depart later. Appreciate your help but I don't want to bother the guy. Might be nice to sleep in a bit anyway!

Jon...I'll try and ask the broker if that can be arranged. That would be a HUGE time saver but I'll bet they'd never allow it. I probably can't make it to the inlet on what's in the tanks now. Which sucks b/c I'd have to stop twice. We're talking 25 miles to the inlet, 18 to the canal. I should be able to get to the canal on 65 gallons (assuming the gauges are accurate). I know there are places in the canal...Hampton Watercraft and Marine, Jacksons Marina. I'll give them a call too. If I can get to one of these I only need one stop. I see Oaklands on the chart. Looks like the "Last Chance Fillup" out there. I'll call them too.

Keep those ideas coming.

Oaklands would be the last chance before....Liberty Landing ?
as mentioned, there are a few places Open in the canal
Can always duck into Jones inlet and have Jons gas truck meet you at his marina.............

Ron, there's always Fire Island Inlet (Frank and Dicks) or Jones Inlet (Scottys) - assuming they're still there (I'll find all this out). Way before LLM is Rockaway Inlet - my old stomping grounds - quite a few places up in there, but now we're talking WAYYYYY out of the way. I need to fill up before leaving Shinnecock and then I can make the run to Manasquan without sweating it. These other places will be investigated as emergency stops. We plan to stay 5-7 miles off the south shore and start cutting southwest btwn Jones and E. Rockaway Inlets.

Frank & Dicks and Scottys are not open...yet...Bay fishing station is open.. just past long beach on the intercoastal...between jones and rockaway.
Best bet is greenport if you can top off then oaklands.............
good luck

Ron,
When I bought Robert's boat I made it to Sayville from Forked River without filling up again. I was full, about 220 gallons & my avg burn was 30 gph for about 4 hours. What is your capacity? Maybe you can shoot straight from Shinnecock?

[FONT=Tahoma, Calibri, Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif]Ron.. Take note of the notice below. In regards to fuel, can't you simply have the broker fill it and charge it to your credit card? This way you are ready to go when you get to the boat.

Cod, I would ask him but the problem is that the marina gas docks are down. Also, after running some numbers, I've come to the conslusion that if I fill up in Greenport, I'll barely make it to Manasquan inlet - assuming a range of 130 statute miles and allowing for 10% reserve (remember, this is a gas boat). I can get to Manasquan on that tankful but it leaves no room for error. Which is why I'd need to get closer to the inlet before tanking up OR I'd have to stop twice in Long Island, and I really don't want to stop twice.

Thanks for the obstruction alert. Will be sure to enter it in the chartplotter before setting out.

Ron,
Another marina on the Shinnecock canal is Jackson's Marina http://www.jacksonsmarina.com/ (631) 728-4220. Very good chance they will be open as most of the boats there are fishing vessels. Jackson's is located on the south end of the canal and will be on your port side. Another thing is the current can rip thru the canal at certain times. You will be going with the current and you may have to pass thru a narrow gate so be sure to stay ahead of the current with power to maintain control. You may want to call the locks to see when they will be open. It is much better to transit thru when the locks are closed or when the current is at a minimum. I would call a day before to get the most accurate info for the next day.
Enjoy the cruise and be safe..........

Ron

When my gauges show 1/4 tank at rest, I have 1/2 tank of gas. The gauges are accurate when I'm on plane. Maybe some other 380 owners can confirm their boats are the same. With a full tank 275 gallons assuming a 10 % reserve, with smooth seas I can make about 172 miles. 3500 RPM's

When I bought my boat I went from the Shrewsbury River NJ to Deep River Ct on one tank. Which I believe is a little further then you have to go.
