Great Lakes Launch Dates?

Shooting for May 1st here in Pittsburgh....almost ready, just have to wax and clean.

Splashed on 4/2! Snowed on 4/5 and today...4/9 I'll be takin a little cruise after work!

In the Northeastern part of Lake Erie we get punished longer than most. A steel pontoon and chain "ice boom" is stretched across the mouth of the Niagara River (from Buffalo to Fort Erie, ON) in order to keep the river free of ice most of the winter. This is mostly to protect the hydro-electric installations from ice damage and to reduce flooding caused by ice buildup.

What it means to us living on or near the shore of Lake Erie is that spring comes to us 3 or 4 weeks later. There is a temperature difference of about 10 degrees within a mile of the water.

And, it means no boats in the Niagara River until the ice boom is removed (usually around April 15), and it takes at least a good week to have Lake Erie flush all the ice down the river.

No docks can be installed until the ice is gone too - since the ice pieces that float down the river can be huge and will wipe out anything in their paths.

So, the boat stays dry until the ice is gone and the docks are in. Good riddance, ice!

For those interested, here's a link to info on the boom: http://www.ijc.org/rel/boards/niagara/ice_glace-info_e.pdf

In the slip as of last night. Feels great to be back on the water, my kids and I enjoyed the cruise to our summer marina... Going out again tonight, and on Saturday!
SB in GP, did you move slips closer to the boat-house? Thought I saw you there...

I was going to put mine in this weekend and do some fishin' - but the canvas shop is still not done, so It'll have to wait another week.

Who ended up doing your canvas job berth control?

YESTERDAY!

Had a nice ride from Leamington, ON to our marina (Holiday Harbour) at Grassy Island in the Detroit river.

Boat ran perfect and it's nice to have her wet.

bouttime,

Awesome! Looks like we're starting to get some boating weather.

got the call from the marina that they pulled the boat out of storage. Looks like I know where I'll be tomorrow! YIPPEE!!!

 It sure is

About the boat though - I am still waiting on my canvas guy to finish up, in the mean time I'm gelous of you guys. I may not do much cruising, but some fishing or slow trolls would be nice in the 50deg. and sunny weather.

Ricochet, since you are in Whitehall, try Miller's Canvas in Holton. They are Amish and do outstanding canvas work. I have 3 or 4 friends that have had all their canvas replaced by them.

Oh, my slip neighbor launched yesterday, he is the only boat in the marina, we are launching next Friday

Got everything done. Putting the name on tomorrow and be splashing on Sunday the 19th :smt038. So excited probavly take it for a shake down cruise.

Last night - it felt great, even though i was cold and ran soft aground in the "channel" that was supposed to be dredged.:smt009

WHAAAAAAA!!!! So lemme get this straight. You splash and on your initial shake down...you run aground? Have you offended the gods in anyway lately? I think you should make a beer offering to them ASAFP!!

She splashed yesterday and today I took her to her new home Cedar Point, lake was calm and air temps mid 60's she ran great and with the new prop rpm maxed out @4600 like she should and 36 mph on gps full fuel and 3 onboard, very very happy,oh Cedar Point Marina is awsome

I've got to chime in here quick to set the record straight. To the best of my understanding I belive the lake gods prefer Good Irish Wisky. Once the boats are in the fine gentlmen of L-Dock tip one to the gods to tame thier winds for our summer travels. Naturaly we dont let the gods do this by them selves. We enjoy with a few tastes our selves. Last year Bushmils 1608 this year it will be Black Bush. Hell of a way to get the dock off to a good start. Calm Seas To You!

yea, apparently I didn't do something right, 'cuz after running soft aground I overheated an engine tonight. Something's F-ed on my engine, and I dont know what. :smt013

It was a REALLY nice night on the lake though, you could see your reflection in the water the whole time - smooth as glass...... Until the buzzer went off and I lifted the engine hatch to see nothing but a huge plumbe of smoke:smt089

Just changed the profile pic took it from the front deck hatch last night - this is how the lake looked all afternoon/night, just beautiful! Even though we had engine trouble, it was a great time.

Eric- The water looks great in your photo. Sounds like your impeller is bad. We ran in friends boat to Port Washington from Milwaukees in less than 1 foot seas. Just a bit chilly as water was 37-38 yet. Still better being on it than....
