I have a 2002 240 DA which is new to me!

The boat came with an ancient Garmin GPS, the Garmin 215. I decided that I wanted something new, so I bought a Garmin 545s.
Unfortunately, the old power/data cable for the 215 did not fit the new 545s. The pins are setup differently.

Does anyone know if there is an adapter? Or do I have to take apart the dash and install a new power/data cable?

ALSO, the existing cable for the 215 is run through a hole on top of my dash to the left of my compass (see pic). If I have to change this cable, what is the best way to access it? Remove the dash gauge panel or open the hinged panel below the steering wheel?

Thanks,
Ed

I think you will find it best to close the cabin door and open both the hinged door below the steering wheel and remove the instrument cluster under your compass. You'll find the power block in there that more than likely your existing GPS is attached to. I have the 545s also and installed it in a different spot( I wanted visibility through the windshield). But you'll want to access the power block(bus) behind the access door.

Getting behind the Instrument cluster will allow you to access and reroute and tie back your wiring.

Thanks! I assume I will need to disconnect power before making this cable change. Suggestions on this? I am somewhat overwhelmed by the various switch panels and battery switch on my boat.

Also, did you install your transducer while your boat was in or out of the water?

Hopefully I will have the time to do this by the end of the weekend.

Yes, you can turn your battery switch off to make the connections.

I also did the transducer while the boat is out of the water(which is most of the time because I trailer it)

From a post from last spring. Heater install and GPS installation beginning
In continuing to get Nehalennia ready and complete the Heater installation, I wanted to get the transom mounted transducer mounted before all the panels are buttoned up.

I used a Forstner bit for the through hull next to the Starboard Trim tab. I verified inside the engine compartment that this area was clear from any obstructions.

This bit gives a very clean cut and unlike a hole-saw won’t grind the edges of the hole potentially separated the fiberglass layers. This way I know once I filled it with 5200 it would be well sealed.

I cleaned up this extra 5200, and put a piece of blue tape over it to hold the rest of it in. I should have put the tape there before I filled it.

I let the 5200 dry for a little bit, had some lunch and then ran the cable to the dash and zip tied it all back.

Installed last weekend with no problems. Thanks for all your help. The Garmin 545s is a great unit, too.
