GPS Chart plotter Installation

I have a 1998 SeaRay 250 Sundancer. It did not come with a GPS and I'd like to instal one. I'm not sure how to hook up the electronics in order to get power to the unit or connect it to my depth finder. Any one out there with some advise?

I recently had a GPS installed. The power and ground for the GPS unit will need to go to your fuse box. The transducer will be the hardest. You will need to decide on a transom mount, or thru hull mount. On my boat I did a transom mount. You will have to drill a small hole above the water line on your transom. The wire will run to your GPS unit. The device will come with very detailed instructions on how to mount the transducer. Proper placement is essential. Basically, you will need to be away from your outdrive, about 1/8" below the transom and in a place that is underwater while on plane. I paid someone to do it because I didn't want to run the wiring. That was before I knew my boat and how easy it would have been for me.

You can also install an in-hull transducer (shoot thru Hull) and avoid drilling holes in the boat. The in-hull give better readings on plane but not as detailed when sitting still. I am installing sounder module and in hull on my 290DA this weekend.

Are you guys trying to josh us? I mean how many GPS satellites are located under water? I know its winter, but someone should have spotted this one sooner.

Ya think?

Since you say you have a depthsounder, trace the wiring back- should go to an "accessory" or similarly labeled switch. If you're lucky, there will be a bus where you can simply connect the gps power. If not, you may need to add one.

When you say "connect it to my depthfinder" what do you mean?
A gps would not typically be connected to a depthfinder unless it had some way of displaying position information...

Ha I breezed right by the GPS portion. I read transducer and since I'm working on my chart plotter fish finder combo I just jumped into transducer installation and skipped right by the sat. receiver.

Maybe you can get china if you mount you sat receiver on the bottom of the boat.

I realize you guys with larger boats may have a separate sonar and GPS displays. But us small boat guys have GPS systems that have sonar. Thus the sonar information and GPS information is shown on the same screen.

I am goint to install one on mine, but my concern is the size of the hole I need to drill in the hull. There is a plug that has to fit through the hole and is pretty big, maybe 3/4 inch. The wire itself is small but the plug is big and a hole that size is big for a boat I would think. Any thoughts?

This is an old thread, would have been better to create a new one with your question :) The hole for the plug needs to be sufficient for the plug. You could cut the cable and splice it, but a transducer uses a shielded cable so that wouldn't be the best idea.

Drill the hole ABOVE the water line, run the connector through and seal the hole with 3M 4200. Cover with a cable clam and you'll be good to go. Personally, I would also always cover the hole with epoxy before running the cable and sealing it to prevent ANY water ingress into the transom.
