Government Shutdown

It's estimated the population of Mexico and the other small Central American countries will increase 40 million people in the next 20 years. Knowing that some of those countries can't even deliver the mail with a finer accuracy than 'city', I think it's fair to expect they'll make little progress in providing for an even larger population.

We better get border security and immigration policies tuned up because we'll face an increasingly large flow of folks abusing 'asylum seeker' status, the majority being economic migrants, not victims of persecution.

Everyone needs to understand that this board protection issue is not about keeping families seeking asylum out. I would hope we would all want to offer aid and shelter when truely necessary. My wife is a naturalized citizen and her family legally immigrated from Cuba to escape Castro.

If you want to see the big picture of what is really going ono then look at the linked video from the border visit that the MSM seems to have embargoed from their party line retoric.

Specifically listen to the report given at approximately 1:30 in.

Term limits...it works for Presidents... it would definitely work for these two, Pelosi and Schumer and some on the Republican side

Congress was originally envisioned as a forum for part time representatives that would meet to conduct the business of the nation and then go home back to their regular jobs.

Somehow this got contorted in a place to find a permanent job and to make yourself rich.

Term limits will be the answer to eventually draining the swamp. Unfortunately do we really think Congress or the lobbiests want this - no - so good luck getting that legislated.

My mother works for NSF. She’s on furlough and getting used to it at this point. Government pays her back pay when they start again, so basically a paid vacation.

Not necessarily. If you remember we were in a similar situation back at the end of 2017. Trump was not given the funding he wanted back then as part of the 1.3 trillian omnibus spending bill that he signed. At that point he made it very clear he would not do this again.

Trump even offered a very good DACA compromise (but unpopular from a republican perspective) that the Democrats did not want to accept.

Bingo! This was debated during the Omnibus Bill fiasco. That was one of the issues I took with Trump. He shouldn't have signed that disaster. It seems the MSM, including FOX, omits this in their reporting. This isn't just happening all of a sudden.

Indeed - and abolish the 17th. Schumer doesn't represent the whole of New York, just like Hillary's popular vote of only 57 counties doesn't represent the whole of America. The Schumers of the world would disappear quickly with Term Limits & a repeal of the 17th....I digress...

- Term limits
- All laws passed by congress must apply to its own members.
- No congressman or senator gets get paid if any part of the government is shut down.
- No bill may be passed that includes any unrelated baggage or expenditures.
- Every bill must be brought to a final vote.

Make these changes and listen to the rush of water as it drains from the swamp.

Add to that the line item veto power for the President. That way even if they stuff the bill with unrelated fundings it can be cut out.

I was once a huge term limits supporter. But am now just hoping we can find a way to "drain the swamp", for which I hold little hope will happen. In different election cycles (2006 & 2010) favoring different parties and philosophies, many new members were elected to the house. They were on a mission to "change DC" for the people.

This is a hypothetical of the way it works: They get to DC with a couple of trusted aides. They are assigned another 12-18 staff by leadership, I call them the DC permanent class. (Remember, they likely know few people in DC, they were just elected and are rookies.) The elected member and the 2 close aides make up, give or take, 20% of the team, the DC permanent class makes up the majority. Think that does not have an affect on the congresspersons voting?

The people that work at all the divisions of the federal government, the political parties, the lobbyists, the fundraisers, the law firms, etc. they are there for years and years. The term limits might just be a case of "be careful what you wish for", inexperienced elected officials going to the DC buzz saw after every election. A large rookie class of House of Representatives every few years? Who wins with that? The DC permanent class, that's who.

“Something happens to almost everyone who is elected to the U.S. House or the Senate. They all promise to charge into Washington and “drain the swamp.” But it only takes a few months before they discover the swamp can be a pleasant hot tub. And they want to stay in for a nice long soak.” ―Ken Buck

But that also applies to the DC permanent class. The only way to fix the issue is to go back to the founders intent of sovereign states in a Constitutional Union, removing power from the Fed to the states. Why is so much money now spent on even unelected Supreme Court justices? Too much power in DC...

It would take a long time to get a Pelosi, Feinstien, Booker, Menendez, Schumer, Flake, Romney, Sanders, Warren, Kaine, Harris... to the level and power they are at now....even with the DC permanent....just make the term shorter. There is no way they should be in this much control.
I know my list is a bit one sided but I was in a hurry :)

From where do they derive that power, not just from time on the job?

Lobbyists, relationship building, donors, themselves and time... cut the head off with time

For sure.... There is not one answer but terms would sure help. Pelosi isn't speaker because she sits on any committees.. But ...She sure can raise some money for the party

If by permanent DC class you mean people like Pelosi, Schummer, Grasley, Hatch, etc., you're right. I'm not so worried about the help. If you get rid of all the career politicians, the help will fall in line and do what the need to do to keep their job. Right now the elected clowns pass laws without the consequences of having to live with them. Send them home after a few years, I guarantee the laws will get better. In fact, they don't fix the big issues because they want them for the next election -- it's all about re-election, not solving our problems.

Did you read my post defining the DC permanent class?

The real thing is the accumulation of power over others, concentrated in DC.
