I have a factory Good Rope Windlass. My question is...When I am realing in the rode/rope and the line goes slack the windlass seems to not slip or no pull in the rode...When the light is tight the windlass has no problems...

Is my windlass malfunctioning, and if so what could be wrong?

I have a Good windlass as well.
Make sure when you set it you quick up to lock the line.
Mine was not returning well.... 1 foot every 30 seconds.
I emailed them for help and the responded quickly and with reasonable fix solutions.
I did change my entire unit and line as it was mid season and I just needed it fixed fast for time at the beach.
Four kid pressure, if you catch my drift..
Good luck.

Ok, now that I am sober let me try it again.

Your windlass needs the line handling end to be serviced. There are some springs and rollers that keep tension on the line so it takes up the rode with a load or not. The danger in not repairing it is that you are wearing the line surface every time the windlass slips. As the line wears, the slipping gets worst and harder to avoid.

Good has a remanufacturing service that is very good (excuse the pun). You send the entire windlass in to them in NJ and they completely service it to the point that you cannot tell it from a new one when it is returned to you. They will give you a cost estimate after they receive the windlass and look at it......until they see it, any cost you get is a just a guess.

I have a CFD Good and it goes back every 5 years for service.

Remove the line, remove 4 bolts thru the deck from the top, then take 2 wires off the motor and its free.

One think you might ask the folks at Good about is upgrading the motor to the new 4 pole design. It requires a new gear set and solenoid pack, but the trade off is about 2X faster line take up and a lot more pulling power. The other suggestion I would make is to ask for a deal on a new rode whenyou talk to t hem about the cost of the repairs. I have found that they will help out a lot on the line price when its part of the repair or upgrade...........and with a 15 year old line and a windlass that has been skipping and stalling, you likely need to replace the rode.

Thanks frank, will do...I wish I could control the windlass from the bow...maybe they have some kind of switch or controller I can get also...

I have a great windlass...as they say good is the opposite of great... ; )

I have a Good windlass with many hours on it. There is a spring loaded paw that pushes the rode against the windlass. Lubricate it and make sure it is moving freely. If the rode isn't well in the V of the pulley it will slip. A slack rode will no pull well. Put just a little tension on it to make sure it is well in the V. Also, make sure your rode is not piling up in the locker causing it to go out of the V. After a while, the rode does wear, becomes thinner and slipperier.
