I am thinking about having the first over night trip in Puget sound.
What would be a fun place for the whole family including 2 teen girls?
Do I need to call the place to book in advance? ( this Wednesday to Thursday)
I will be leaving from Lake Washington.
    So far I am thinking:
    • Port Townsend
    • Poulsbo
    • Blake Island
    • ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Cal.

Lot of good choices - Poulsbo is a nice town with a lot to do, but the marina has very poor customer service, and you may have problems with their new power system. Bainbridge Eagle Harbor is very nice, and is close to Blake Island. Gig Harbor is really nice.

You should definitely get reservations this time of year.

I absolutely love Blake Island, but in the summer months you need to get there probably by Friday afternoon/evening to get a spot for the weekend. You could try going early in the morning on Saturday as well, but it fills up very quickly on nice weekends. You can't call ahead for a spot, though I've heard that you can call the ranger station if you are close by to see if there are any slips open, if not you can decide to seek out a mooring ball on the south side of the island or just continue on to somewhere else.

Another place I would recommend is Poulsbo, it's a very nice marina and quaint little town. Great food options, and a main street for just walking around and shopping. You can book that in advance. It is a good backup option if you shoot for Blake and can't get a slip, just continue on to Poulsbo.

Thanks for the info. Because I dont want to deal with crazy traffic on weekends, I am leaving tomorrow. (Wed). Hopefully the locks and marinas aren't too busy.

What has Poulsbo done with their power system? I haven't been there for a while now.

You should be just fine on a mid-week excursion. Good luck and have fun, let us know what you decided on!

One of our favorite marinas is Poulsbo and of the options you listed would be the most fun for teenagers. Was not aware of a change in their power system - we go there a least three times a season. Call ahead for a reservation but mid week you shouldn't have any problem getting a slip.

The upgraded their power system to comply with new state regulations. Now each pedestal has 30ma GFCI breaker on it. We were there for July 4th, and 25% of boats couldn't get power. The marina staff was HORRIBLY RUDE. One of them told me my boat was defective. In fact i have an isolation transformer, which is supposed to work fine with the new systems. All they needed to do was say "Hey, this is a new system, and we are still working out the kinks".

After the event, my friend complained about the rudeness to the port commissioner. A marina employee then e-mailed my friend about his complaint, and was incredibly offensive.

Thanks everyone I had a great time at Poulsbo. The town was much nicer than expected and there were lots of restaurants and small shops girls enjoyed. I am not sure this is because I went there in the middle of the week, both the staff as well as the dock host were friendly and helpful. Perhaps the guy with the attitude was replaced :)
Anyways, the shore power is tricky to use. It trips at 30ma which means nothing should be connected before you turn the main power. Even everything turned off, I did witness the power trips the circuit breaker. I can see how this could save lives in the future but could frustrate lots of folks if not properly explained or perhaps there is a problem with the system. The dock host (aka camp host for marina) was a good guy as well and said he would be also hosting @ Blake Island in a couple of week. Going thru locks was easy as it wasn't too busy. Boating in Puget Sound has proven to be a great activity and I can totally see myself spending more time and money in it.

After the first night, I quickly realized I need a bigger boat I am going to spend multiple nights. :)
