Im taking my boat out on Superior. I am going in at Duluth and cruising up to the Apostle Islands. Is there anything I should be careful about. How close can I cruise to the shore and not have to worry about depth safetly? Does anyone know how far it is from Duluth to the Apostle Islands? Is there places to get gas? If my boat decides to break down is there tow services up there?

Well to start with you can cruise very close to shore if you wish...I run about 2-3 miles off of shore..

Your 1st Island (SAND ISLAND) is about 52 miles from Duluth, no fuel though....Not until you get to Bayfield which is about 72 miles....

Really the only place you need to be careful is when you get to Sand Island ...If you go around Sand you will be fine....But the short way is to go between Sand Isand and Little Sand Bay..It gets very shallow...but if you follow your GPS and stay in the 4' foot water you will be fine!!

As far as I know there is NO tow Service....

Have ever been to the Islands???

I'm heading down on the 16th for 10 days..

I have done the Apostles many times. Very beautiful area.

First off, invest in some charts. I know everyone likes their chartplotters, as do I, but having some paper charts to study before you make the trip is invaluable, IMO. Particularly in an area that you are not familiar with. Study them well before you go.

Are you trailering yourself? If so, I would strongly suggest you tow to Bayfield. It is wonderful place to base your trip from. Gives you options of staying out on the islands, when the weather cooperates, and if not, Bayfield will provide you with something to do.

It is predominately deep water, with a few danger areas. With just a little planning, you will have a safe trip. Figuring out which islands to visit will be the hard part! If you like lighthouses, you have hit the jackpot.
