I am a new boater and bought a 2005 260 DA.

The boat's history has never seen it touch salt water and for this reason the hull has never been painted.

As I have brought it home to Shediac, it will be going into the salt and I will have to protect my hull with paint and have a few questions?

1. Since there is no removal of old paint, is the application process just like painting a wall or is there something different in terms of prep and application for boats that I need to know?

2. Is this doable, or best left to the pro's?

3. Suggestions for best product? My Hull is all white.

Thank you

It is pretty simple to paint a hull but there are things you have to do (prep work). Most will be listed on the can of paint. Here is a website that goes over it all.

Agreed it is a fairly simple process, but its a bit messy and fairly volatile so proper PPE and environment protection is necessary. Also you should check with your yard to see what restrictions they have on painting and sanding, if any.

May want to barrier coat before bottom painting, now would be the time since you have no paint on the bottom.

Once the bottom is clean. Barrier coat is an epoxy based coating. Apply the same way you would your bottom paint. Once dried, bottom paint over it. The purpose is to prevent blistering or the gel coat.
