twin 350's w/ gen 2 drives
this is a story that hopefully will inform- 2000 280 with twin 350's with beneath hull intakes- spent 2 days prepping for splash down- closed intakes to run engines in the yard-up until 11:30
pm for next morning plunge- put the boat in the water- start engines- going well for 3 minutes- alarms start screaming- 10 minutes to dock at idle speed-(not familiar with alarms)- think it may be high water- at dock - raise hatch- little water- CL0SED INTAKES- time to sit down and ponder the destruction of 2 engines with 315 low hours-wait a while to restart engines with intakes open- seem to run ok-temp steady- shut it down- Sunday take family up local waterway to beach site at 1100 rpm- seems ok- open it up a little on way back- seems ok- get to dock- smoke in bilge-maybe some oil- week later go for same ride- 3 minutes later smoke everywhere - shut down starboard engine- at dock- wire loom stuck to exhaust pipe- starboard side manifold is red hot-not getting water flow- portside of engine is only warm- remove manifold and riser - replace same- also replace water impeller- when I open it up the impeller is in new condition-I replace it anyway- when I ran the engines in the yard the system was closed to the outside- freshwater filled the strainer and impeller- with no new water coming in the residual water stayed in place? preserving the impellers? - a few days later run the engines to chech RPM limit with no load- seems ok- shut down - here water dripping- both engines do not have 5th plug in block- but only dripping and have been missing for past 2 weeks through all of this- - low hours but sitting too much- bought 2 years ago but surgery postponed needed attention- disclaimer- I am 71 - I have owned 4 different boats over the past 50 years- none with similar technology- I like to think I am attentive to the maintenance needed- but I hope this tale helps you-19ed50
