320 Sundancer. I have the standard thru hull fitting for the 4.5kW westerbeke generator from the factory. All the other water inlets have scoops. The generator is the only strainer that I have trouble with clogging with grass and sea weed. A typical weekend at Put In Bay harbor where the grass is thicker, I have to clean out the strainer daily for the geny with no problems at all in the other strainers, A/C or engines. I run with the geny on about 50% of the time. Any suggestions for a strainer to add over the thru hull fitting and still not force water into the geny while running with it off, or starve it for water while running with it on? Or to just replace the thru hull fitting with one that has a coarse screen built into it to keep the big stuff out, which sounds like it could be more of a pain? Or just live with it and clean/check the strainers daily, haha?

I'm curious to hear others answers on this one because I don't think you can do anything about it. I have the same problem with my Kohler gen. I clean the gen strainer daily but the AC needs it maybe once every 2 months. I run the AC 24/7 at the dock and it's running whenever the gen is running.

I don't think you'd want to put a strainer over the thru hull fitting as you'd then have a problem with it clogging. I haven't had this problem at PIB but then I seldom get a ball. I have a dock neighbor that usually ties up to a ball and he hasn't had this problem.....Not sure what the answer would be to your problem
