Generator replacement

No one suggested that.

However, Broward Armature does on occasion have used units of other manufacturers that they recondition and resale.

I would buy a used gas unit from Broward before I would buy one from an unknown source.
I misunderstood. Sorry.

Before I purchased my new generator I explored all options.
The price difference between used , rebuilt and new was not worth the risk to save a small amount of money. I plan to keep this boat for a while so I went with a new cummins.
Good luck with whatever you choose

Again the boat is a 1994, it is in good shape and the twin 454 are original and run great, they only have about 600 hours on them. Finding is difficult to invest 13k for a new generator in a 26 year old boat. does Broward Armature sell direct?

Call them and tell them your situation. Ask if they have any gas gensets available to replace yours. If they don't, he may be able to refer you to someone. Broward Armature is a stand up business.

And yes, they sell direct.

Thanks will give Broward a call. In the meantime I found a Re-built Kohler 7.3ECD Gas for $6,995.00 at Boat Energy LLC in Ft. Lauderdale FL. and a Westerbeke &.0 BCGC for $7.350.00 same place. Both are smaller than my 7.5kw Quicksilver so should fit with no problem. Thoughts on Kohler VS Westerbeke? Thanks.

Did some more research. This is what I came up with. Broward Armature has nothing available at this time. Yachts and Diesels in Ft. Lauderdale has a couple used units for 3-4K. From the pictures they look pretty beat up and old.
Boat Energy LLC has a re-built Kohler 7.3ECD for $6,995.00 Plus shipping, around $300.00. And they have a Westerbeke 7.0BCGC for $7,350.00, plus shipping, both re-built.
Now here's the kicker. Found a place called FMOutboard, They have a brand new Westerbeke 7.5MCGA for $8,400.00 plus free shipping. They Also have a Kholer 7.5EKD brand new for $4,990.00 with free shipping. They sent me a E-mail confirming units were new and free shipping. I priced a new Westerbeke at over $12,000.00. How can FMoutboard do this? Am I missing something here? Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

This? https://fmoutboard.com/

I'm not comfortable in dealing with a company outside the US, much less Indonesia.

That place is sketchy I’ve seen other reports of people ordering small outboard motors and never receiving them proceed with caution

Thanks everyone for your advice. Thought they may be a little shady. To good to be true I guess. Will continue my hunt for Genny replacement.

Go with someone reputable. Be wary of Krylon overhauls or unknown takeouts.

Just curious, did you ask Broward about possibly rebuilding your unit?

I posted this on another thread, but I was at Broward Armature yesterday to buy a part. Everyone there was very helpful and knowledgeable. I got to see the shop. Everything was clean, organized, and professional. I would not have any reservations buying from them.

Did not ask Broward about re-build of my ancient Quicksilver, very difficult to get parts for. Would prefer a replacement. I did talk to them on the phone and he just dosen't have anything in the shop at this time.

Met people at RV park that had propane generator in their camper van. I do not know if it was water or air cooled. If water cooled would it work in a boat? I have no idea if generator on boat is different than one in an RV. I am not a mechanic so do not know if you can convert propane engine to gas
Just a thought.

Converting the fuel type would most likely require a new carburetor, given propane is a gas (vapor) and gasoline is a liquid.

Air cooled wont work well in a enclosed engine room.

Exhaust would also be an issue. RV typically has a 1" pipe leading towards the ground for exhaust. This is a dry exhaust, meaning exhaust gas only - and it gets hot. Marine units typically have a wet exhaust -- the water used to cool the engine is pushed into the middle of the exhaust pipe -- which cools the exhaust gases -- allowing the exhaust/water mixture to exit the boat through a heavy duty rubber hose.

You also have the marine requirements - ignition protected components, and living in a marine engine room.

Edited - added Exhaust section.

I found a new Kohler for sale for $4,500, with sound shielf. Its right down the road from me, it was purchased years ago but never installed. It is gas, the catch is it is only a 5kw unit. I would have to do a load analysis, its 1.5kw less than my quicksilver. I have two a/c units 1600BTU and 1200Btu Fridge, ice maker, battery charger, microwave, tv. I dont use the hot water heater. Any electrical engineers out there that say its too small??

Watts divided by volts = AMPs. What is the continuous running load on your 5KW generator. AC each draw 10+ amps Ice make probably 5 AMPs Stove up to 15AMPs depending on number of burners on. Battery charger depending on size can dray close to 15 AMPS. Not all things come on at the same time. Watch your loads and you should be OK.

Here are some numbers to put things in perspective, using some general assumptions regarding what you might have onboard. Since you dont use the water heater, that is a a plus. You may need to monitor your demand if you start cooking, and shut down one or both AC units. The startup current draw on the AC units is what will kill you. Some newer units stagger their on-cycle, to help minimize total draw.

6500 watts @120v = 54.1amps [Original 6.5KW Quicksiler]
5000 watts @120v = 41.6amps [New Kohler 5.0KW 5EKD]

Fridge 0.4amps [Norcold DE-0061, 7cu ft]
Ice Maker 2.5amps [Uline 21"]

AC Total 32.6 / 19.7
AC 16,000 BTU 17.6amps / 10.8 [start/run]
AC 11,000 BTU 14amps / 7.9 [start/run]
AC Water Pump 1amp [0.99amps]

Microwave 9-15amps
Stove 10amps / 10amps / 10amps [each burner (3) is 1200w]

BattCharger 4amps* [Pronautic 1240P - 15amp AC breaker]
12volts * 40amps = 480watts / 120v = 4amp*
*unable to find actual specs for AC current draw

WaterHeater 12.5amps [1500watt element]

Thanks for the breakdown. Correction on the Quicksilver it is a 7.5KW and the a/c units are 16,000 and 12,000. How does your calculations breakdown to total watts???
