Generator Placement??????????????

Although you already bought the generator, have you considered using an inverter to give you 110 volts? I just installed an 1800 watt Xantrex marine inverter, and it does the job to power the TV, microwave, small shop-vac...etc. Of couse, you wouldn't want to cook a turkey in the microwave. At least not without the engine running to replenish the batteries.

That diverter valve I posted is made of plastic so it's probably not a good idea... could melt... make a mess...

So ignore that advice.

If any of you are wondering why this really bad idea keeps coming up, check this out. I am a member of BoatUs and therefore get their magazine. There is a section called "Ask the Experts" where people ask the kind of questions we see here on CSR. The May/June issue arrived yesterday and on page 61, a boater was asking if the regular boat alternators are strong enough to power an inverter for the hot water heater or a hair dryer. The answer was no, "your power requirements will be much better met by a small portable gasoline powered generator such as the 2KW Honda".
This is the official magazine of Boat US and the answer was provided by "Chuck Husick, engineer, sailor, pilot and former president of Chris-Craft".
You would think that he and this magazine would know better than to recommend this. I know that there are members out there who use this generator and have gone to great great great lengths to ensure that CO exposure is minimized, but this article gave NO mention of the potential danger of what he was proposing. He did say this generator was quiet enough to not disturb other nearby boats.

So....choose your "expert".
