Question on those with 280DA’s plus generator – a 280DA owner (with out a generator) said I will have issues using the generator wile underway on plane since the water to cool the gen will not get picked up properly on the 280DA’s. I think its BS but wanted to ask my friends here just in case.

I did ask this in another thread but it got lost.

No problem running mine while underway. While I have a 260, a thru-hull is a thru-hull. There are plenty of 280's down here that run their generators while under way.

Man Teekster, that is one tight slip you have.

It is BS.

One thing I would recommend is going with the new era clean electronically controlled and fuel injected units. I had the old style in my 2003 280 which you could smell and my new one is so clean you can't even denote a hint of exhaust smell. I love the new units! I swear it is quieter too.

It's 14 feet wide. It looked much bigger when we had our 280 in it. We are buying a house on this lake in September, So I can make my slip as wide or as narow as I choose!

Actually, its not entirely BS. My genny will keep running on plane up to about 30mph - faster than that and it will dehydrate and shut down. I know of at least 2 other Sea Rays with a similar situation. I don't consider it a problem because I rarely go over 30mph anyway.

OFFTOPIC-
MARQBLOQ- Did you slip down at Janzen Bay row 2 last month? I was next to you for a few weeks!

Doug- I am finally getting around to writing you a response re: going out of state for your new toy.

Having moved from the Fox River Valley 2 years ago, I had my boat for sale until last July when I had it brought out by a Semi using my trailer. Reading your posts brings back many memories of boating the Fox and the Wolf. Good to see you are such an active poster!

If you want more info re: the haul West or if I can help in any way let me know!
Smooth waters and good luck with the search!
Stuart

Carpedmman:

Yes, that was I. I remember I tried to find some Goof Off for you. As I told you, we moved our 320 up to Detroit Lake for the summer. That is where Aquapalooza is for our area too, will be fun! We'll be back on the island in mid September for the winter.

Take Care!

Carpedmman,

Tanks! If I need to go the ‘pro-haul’ way I will send you a email.

BIG storms today. The area west of us got hit hard. Not a good day to be in the Wisconsin Rapids area. Some schools actually closed early so the kids were off the bus before it hit.

Mine is a '03 280DA w8.1 Horizon engine. Bought just this past April and I have still not got my generator issue completely fixed. It has already seen a new impeller and plugs this summer. It runs sweet at anchor and great up to about a fast idle ~8mph.

I'm not sure exactly what speed it cuts off but it always shuts off somewhere if running it while cruising.

I have noticed that my single engine 280 swim deck is several inches higher out of the water than other twin engine 280's at my Marina. Apparently this might be a problem with only single engine 280's. :smt017

Any ideas, greatly appreciated, Thanx :smt001

Good question. A mechanic working for a Westerbeke distributor told me last week to avoid running my thru-hull generator when on plane. He listed overheating and impeller damage as risks. It may be BS, but this is the second mechanic who has advised me to not operate the generator while on plane. Being the risk-adverse type, I have not tested the advice.

By the way, did you finance your genset? Just kidding. Just kidding.

First I need to wait and see if the loan goes thru for the new dock lines before I apply for the generator loan. :smt043

.....also kidding.......
I have extra lines for you from the sale of Nehalenni II if you need extra lines, but I won't LOAN them to you  you can have them

Thank you for being a good sport.

Just as an update, I am working with one person out of state that has an interest in doing the job and has done the job many times. Also I am talking to one local that is looking into it, has never done it before and I don’t want to push unless they want to do it.

The second is at the marina where we slip our boat. If it’s the first person I would work with the persons vacation when they are visiting family and if its the second I would work with them in the off season when the water is hard. Umm, very hard. Frozen hard.

A third possible option is to allow my boat to be used by the local factory rep and they will use it to teach others how to do it.

The 3 hot days we get a year are already over this year. :smt009

I checked my Owners Manual, and the only caution is to start the gen before getting underway as there is a possibility that it may not be able to pick up water once underway.
