Thought maybe somebody would have some ideas of what is going on. We just had our boat pulled to get waxed and detailed, and then went out this weekend. When starting up the generator it would start, and then cut out because of lack of water being primed. I know sometimes when its taken out if we run it and get on plane and then try, it usually does the trick (for the AC atleast I know that works). After running it for 1.5 hrs, I tried to start again a few times and it still wasn't priming. Any thoughts? Somebody said maybe it could be the impeller?

Thanks!

It could be the impeller.

The generator impeller is about the size of your thumb. These things go out often.
Learn how to change them yourself, carry spares (plural) onboard.

Actually, you should start your gen before you get on plane- not after.
Generators do not have scoops for their pickups (unlike some A/C pickups). Because of this, gens often cannot prime when on plane.

You say the gen "cut out". Do you have a sensor that shuts it down due to lack of raw water flow, or is it an overheat sensor that shut it down?

In any case- assuming the thru-hull is clear, the seacock's open, and the strainer isn't clogged- the gen should self-prime just like your mains. If it doesn't, it has to be the impeller.

Thanks for the info. Yea I tried starting it first before leaving the dock but wasn't working, so then I tried again after running to see if that did the trick which wasn't the case. I'll have to double check the strainer but if not looks like I'll need to get a new impeller from what you say. Yea mine cuts out if water doesn't prime, automatic shut off after like 5 sec.

Is that something easy to install? Never put one in. I know our local dealership changed one out, at the boats 100 hr service middle of last year.

Thanks
