While applying bottom paint this weekend I noticed some damage to the gelcoat on one of the strakes. About a 3 foot area on the edge is missing gelcoat. I believe the bottom paint may have been hiding the damage. I had the marina look at it today and they suggested that it be sanded and then epoxy, then more bottom paint. Is this an acceptable repair? Am I wrong to think that it needs a new layer of gelcoat as well? Advise is appreciated.

That was how a similar repair was carried out on our boat. However, our gelcoat scrape was only 3 inches long. In any event that was at the beginning of last season and there were no detrimental side effects.

I'm curious to see what the experts have to say here, but my thought is that the epoxy is the real boat. The gel is primarily for looks and maybe for reduced drag. I'm thinking that epoxy and paint are fine. Still waiting for the experts, though.
